I pull my hair out trying to explain to my wife the difference between limes ans lemons
I suppose I'm a Limey but I prefer lemons.
Update, went to Makro earlier and their lemons were 115 baht a kilo - not sure if my previous pricing was wrong or now linked to the festive period, but still not too expensive.

Had really good fish&chips at HH Fishing Lodge tonight. :thumb:

No rules about batter, vinegar, ketchup, mayonnaise, tartare sauce, etc. :D

In fact I was asked how I would like it and it came exactly as I wanted it - delicious :thumb:

The wine wasn't bad either - or was that another cultural faux pas?

100% correct! In Makro they sell it under two different names. I've tried it and it's crap, first at a restaurant, and then at home. Fresh water fish is simply NOT suitable for fish and chips, at least not in my opinion. I can however see why some restaurants use it here, given that it's a lot cheaper than fish such as red snapper for example.

Asked at the wet market the other day about the price of red snapper, and was quoted 160 baht for a decent sized fish, filleted. Not sure whether that's about right or not.

PS: Richard, get those mushy peas off your plate before they contaminate your fish, and please, NO more ketchup nonsense when you order F&C. :thumb:  I'm from SA, and even I know F&C and ketchup don't go together. :thumb:

Well, I think F&C is pretty much an English dish. RSA surely is brais and bratwurst and biltong land ,

Never saw F&C in the years I lived in Zimbabwe or my visits to Pretoria, Joburg and The Cape

The Dory is not bad breaded. Although I really like deep fried breaded catfish filets as well, maybe that's the reason. :D Pete

Using Linda's piece of spare land, Coconuts Canadian Jim has opened up. Initial feedback is it's quite good but no way anything like Barry's

Good fish, good batter, good real chips, all with tartar, vinegar and ketchup. Will do well as a bar delivery service for the soi IMO
Where on Soi 80? I'm not sure what "Linda's piece of spare land" is.

Richard dear fellow, you must have had blinkers on when you were in South Africa, and especially in Cape Town. I can assure you, there are probably more fish and chip shops in Cape Town than their are in London. Hell, almost every road has a fish and chip shop. Okay, maybe not quite so many, but certainly a lot more than I ever saw during my 10 years in Scotland. The choices of fish are the same in all SA F&C shops - Hake, Hadock and Snoek. You'll also find most F&C shops sell Vetkoek. Yes, F&C is/was an English thing but let's not forget, SA was under British rule, and us English speaking South Africans held on to our heritage, just as the Afrikaans speaking South Africans held on to their Dutch heritage.

We did however discard the mushy peas, and no, we never have ketchup with our F&C - strictly salt and vinegar. :thumb:

Also, allow me to keep you right........In SA we eat "Boerewors" when we braai, and NEVER EVER EVER bratwurst.

Secondly, comparing SA to Zimbabwe is like comparing Angola to the USA. A trillion miles apart. Don't worry son, I'll keep you right.

Well Takiap, I don't what part of the UK richard really comes from, but in my 55 years living there, I never once went into a F&C shop where tomato sauce was an option for F&C. I've eaten F&C in many parts of the UK, from Penzance to Inverness and spent 8 of those years working in North Yorkshire. My family roots are in Hull, but I feel that I come from Plymouth.

On reflection, I've never smothered food in ketchup but with chips with whatever I always (if possible) have a side dish of Ketchup, Daddies or HP for the odd dip. Possibly because real chips are hard to come by I suppose

Real chips of course should be eaten out of a newspaper with loads of salt and vinegar. The chips should be fat, chunky and double cooked in fat (lard) which is at least 3 months old. Further more, real F&C are accompanied by a pile of 'scraps'

When I lived in 'Ull, I frequented the Gainsborough chippy. Large plate of Haddock, chips and mushies with two large doorstep pieces of bread and butter and a large mug of tea cost 1 shilling and tuppence (how much is that in today's money? 16p? 4 Bht?). Always loads of vinegar and salt but nowt else unless you asked and were prepared to pay for it

6p (3 Baht). A New Year's Day tradition for us was to go to Whitby and have a (Fatboy sized) chip butty, soaked in salt & vinegar; and walk out onto the pier to eat it. A bit bracing, but that was when men were men
