I'm stil with IE but from what I've read on here, FF is a lot better so maybe time to change my old ways. The reason I'm asking about GC is simply because google dominates the internet so perhaps using the GC browser would be a good thing?

I tried it at the same time as my initial venture with firefox - I hated it, and closed it after a few minutes - never to return. Your best bet is to download it and try it for yourself - its easy enough. What doesn't suit me, may be perfect for you :D

I'm on Firefox right now and the only thing I don't like is that the fonts are real scratchy looking. I've tried a few changes and they are still the same. IE is much more smooth and rounded in this regard. Any tips? Pete

Before becoming a Firefox user I used to undertake weekly maintenance on my home PCs, which included going in to Internet Options and Deleting Temporary Files, Cookies, Saved Passwords and web form information.

Can somebody please advise how to do the same on Firefox?

I've just returned home after visiting a friend. My friend's knowledge of computers doesn't stretch far beyond the on switch.

While I was there he asked me if I could sort out his new combi-printer, which somebody else had not been able to install properly for him. I came to the conclusion that the problem was experienced because the anti virus/firewall was still switched on. He uses Norton 360.

I tried to switch the Norton program off, but short of uninstalling it (which my friend was not keen on) I couldn't work out to do it

Can somebody please tell me how to switch off Norton 360 while I install the printer?

Unless someone on here has this program BB you may not get many replies. I've googled around things like "norton 360 installing hardware" and a few others, and all I am seeing is to "disable Norton 360.." There must be a check box somewhere in their menu to do that, then enable it again once the printer is installed. There are also many comments about "drivers not installing properly.." because of Norton 360. Pete

never had to turn off any firewall or a/virus to install a printer :?
but anyway . . .
i haven't used norton 360 but i would imagine the security centre is pretty much the same as other norton products.
first open the security centre by double clicking the desktop or taskbar icon, you should get this screen or similar

Image

click norton internet security either by the link at the top next to home or options on the left.
then click settings to view the next menu. page should be something like this next screenshot.

Image

you then see the auto protect option, click this & you can turn off the anti virus here.
to turn off the firewall, click the norton internet security options link in the same settings menu.
you should then get the general options setting seen in the next screenshot

Image

click on the personal firewall link on the left & you will get the option to turn the firewall off by checking the box.

hope this helps & good luck  :D

Well I hope RZR has been able to help BB with the printer, but just how many Norton thingy's are there? I thought I was on the latest - starting as Norton 2008 (now 2009), but mine looks like this:

Thanks guys for the screenshots that you have provided. However, none of them remotely resemble the Norton 360 screens I was looking at yesterday. Hopefully, as its all Norton, the principals will be similar.

I won't be going back to my friend's house for a couple of weeks, so it'll be a while before I know how helpful you have been.

I did try the help files, but all that I got was similar to Pete ie if you disable Norton, make sure you switch it back on as soon as possible. No indication of how to do either.

When my brother used a much older version of Norton, he used to have all sorts of problems installing anything until he'd switched it off. I used to experience similar problems when I used Zone Alarm.

i'm on 2007 upgraded to 2008. will get the 2009 version when this one runs out.
norton 360 is a new version apparently more compatible for vista. as i don't intend using vista, i'll stick with the NIS 08/09 versions.
i've changed printers 3 times in the last few years & haven't had to alter any a/v or firewall settings.
anyway, hope you sort it out b/b :thumb:

:D I found it http://www.netnanny.com/kb/125.

rzr, wading through the responses on Google, there are a lot of people having similar problems trying to install software - I guess you have been lucky up until now

pretty similar procedures :thumb:
at least me & caller supplied screenshots for you :D

i'm sure there have been problems installing software etc & many issues would involve configuring or turning off the firewall.
never known it for a printer though because most are just plug & play, sometimes there's no need to even load the disc.

i'm sure you'll sort it b/b, i have every faith in you  :D
