Just watched "Where Eagles Dare". Probably only the second time I've watched it since it was released in '68. With a bunch of 'movie legends', it got me thinking. Who today could even shine a light on actors such as Richard Burton, Clint Eastward, Patrick Wymark, Donald Houston, Robert Beatty and many more?
Or am I just getting old?

Also making a movie like that long before CGI was quite an achievement.

I agree, but I must say there are some modern day outstanding actors, off the top of my head Tom Hardy, Di Caprio, Christian Bale, Ben Cummerbund :naughty: :naughty: Jason Staplethem(just joking)

Not true. The Blob, The Day The Earth Stood Still - classics of their genre that put modern-day CGI to shame...

I've just watched 'The Andromeda Strain' from 1971. Seen it before but a long time ago.

There is one scene where the doctors/scientists are asking why a particular action hadn't happened. The answer was that the president has delayed it for 48 hours. The scientists responded that doesn't the president know that by that time we could have a world epidemic (pandemic). The government response was that the president doesn't believe the science and that the evidence they give was nothing more than an accident and nothing to do with Andromeda. The president will act on his own judgement.

Sound familiar?

Well freeview served me up a treat of a movie night tonight!

ITV4 let me finally get round to watching Platoon. :D

Then Film4 served up a very decent Indian movie called Jallikattu. The movie's plot is pretty simple - a buffalo destined for the dinner plate escapes and runs amok in the village. What ensues though is far from simple. With every man in the village on the hunt for this thing it's utter chaos..

Really nicely shot with some good humour in the mix, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Must admit the location brought back fond memories of time living in the sticks in Thailand.

You should have issued a subtitle warning :banghead: . Just wasted 30 seconds downloading it, just to consign it to the bin :cuss:
Championship Plymouth Argyle 1 - 2 Leeds Utd

Sorry BB. Thought any interested folk would watch the trailer and realise it's a subtitled movie. 30 seconds is not too bad a loss. :D

Edit : And remember BB, my movie taste is somewhat different to yours sometimes. Could be another 'Midsommar' for you. 🤣

My philosophy is a recommendation is usually worth a thousand trailers....................... unless its subtitled.

Personally, I find it difficult to sit through subtitled movies. Jallikattu is only the 2nd one I've managed this year. Just checked its reviews and the large majority enjoyed it too. 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.6/10 IMDb.

KNIVES OUT:
Acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) pays tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie in KNIVES OUT, a fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.
It's a tad slow over the first 20 minutes or so, but it's well worth persevering. It also shows there is life after Bond! It has elements of Poirot and Colombo with the occasional nod to Sherlock Holmes. I'm not sure it merits the 97% it gets from Rotten Tomatoes, but I enjoyed it.

I watched it on Amazon Prime, but I'm sure it can be downloaded from all the usual places.

[EDIT: Best watched with a homemade chilli con carne and new potatoes (not rice) and brussels sprouts]
[EDIT 2: My star of the show is the mother of the 85-yr-old victim...]
