I ended up getting so pissed off with Outlook I switched to Gmail. Never looked back. Imported all my contacts from Outlook and told everybody of my switch. So I'm now a FF and Gmail dependent user

Unfortunately Margaret has to get logged in before she could do any mail migration - if she wanted to.
Re: The Digital Surgery
A small thing, but it's beginning to grate! I used to get a tonal 'click' when I clicked on different sites / functions, and pages within sites, windows etd, but it's gone and the silence is deafening. I haven't a clue how to restore it. Volume otherwise ok - Skype, you tube etc.
Can someone put me out of my misery.
Thanks.

If your speakers are working fine, the first check is go into control panel and click on hardware and sound.caller wrote:A small thing, but it's beginning to grate! Click on adjust system volume underneath 'sound' and check the system sounds is not muted (red lined circle).
If that's ok, click on change system sounds, next to adjust system sound, and then click the sounds option.
If it says 'no sounds' in the sounds scheme box, there's your problem and you need to change it to either windows default or any of the other options available.
Hope it solves your grating issue.

Thanks RZR, did all of that following your advice and everything is set up okay, so no change unfortunately. I've obviously changed something, but can't put my finger on it!

In the change system sounds menu (sound option), check the program events box to see which events are enabled, there should be a speaker icon next to each event enabled.caller wrote:Thanks RZR, did all of that following your advice and everything is set up okay, so no change unfortunately. You can test each one individually to see if they are working.
It really is a bit odd considering you have sound otherwise.

Re: The Digital Surgery
Well, I've added a sound to 'open programme' - but I'm not sure that's right!
Edit - That's not right, so I've deleted it!
Okay, when I open for example, the control panel and then use the navigation keys top left, the re-assuring click is still there! As it is for some of the varying options within the control panel when I click on them, although when I go into an option and a new menu opens up, some click and some don't when I access them?
But nothing on IE, so is it an IE issue or is there somewhere that controls sound on IE?

Re: The Digital Surgery
Thanks Buksi for explaining Thunderbird - the little grey cells are a year older lol. (Hope you had a good one.)
Now opened a gmail acount which seems OK so far - however I managed to crash Firefox earlier! Will pm chums with the new address.
hhinner - have phoned Microsoft support - thanks for that link. Awaiting results which could be up to 48 hours. Still unable to import contact details from Hotmail, although a link from Hotmail to a Simple mail account still works.
D'oh - will get there

Re: The Digital Surgery
Hi Margaret. I saw in previous posts that way back in 2012 you were going to ditch Windows and Hotmail. 1 out of 2 ain't bad. Are you going to go through with part 2 now? Hope Microsoft manage to fix up your mail for you. Many (most?) people won't consider calling MS support but sometimes it can be worth it.
Re: The Digital Surgery
Doesn't it cost big money? I remember after installing Windows XP many years ago I was entitled one free support call. After that call it was ridiculously expensive.hhinner wrote:Many (most?) people won't consider calling MS support but sometimes it can be worth it.
I did use that call, and they were extremely efficient.

Re: The Digital Surgery
The sound schemes are part of the Windows operating system.caller wrote: so is it an IE issue or is there somewhere that controls sound on IE?
Have you tried using Chrome or Firefox to see if the sounds work on those browsers?
Have a read through this tutorial and maybe change a few different sounds to see if they work?

It's quite an odd little problem considering how basic the sound scheme is.

Worse case scenario is that you have a corrupted or missing file.

Re: The Digital Surgery
I'll check that link later, thanks.
But I appear to have solved the problem? It appears I had turned off - no idea how - 'play system sounds' on internet options / advanced / accessibility!
But thanks for your assistance!

It's always something simple & it's always 'no idea how it happened'
