Try a small distro, such as puppy linux as described here - http://www.pendrivelinux.com/put-lucid- ... m-windows/. This is only about 128 MB plus a utility to do the USB set up.
This assumes you can boot your laptop from a usb drive. If it's not very old it should be OK.
Thanks hhinner, I'll check out that link.
Here's the computer...
System Manufacturer TOSHIBA
System Model Satellite L740
System Type X86-based PC
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2330M CPU @ 2.20GHz, 2200 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
It was only 'cheap' when I got it 2-3 years back (14,000) so I'm not expecting miracles but would lie to try and get it performing to something near the performance when I bought it.
What OS are you running Win7 or Vista?
If your memory was 'broken' you'd get total failures of the entire system.
4Gb should be enough for normal computing activities and if you think the ReadyBoost made a difference then I suspect your hard disk is maybe about to give up.
Your 4Gb RAM gets swapped in and out of the disk pretty much constantly, when using ReadyBoost it'll keep the swapfiles on the USB. In a fairly modern machine USB 2.0 shouldn't be faster than disk access unless your disk is in trouble.
As adammike has said above, empty your disks of crap, clean up as much as you can, defrag and then set you system to auto-defrag, but first go and buy that external hard drive you were talking about so you can really wipe your disk clean .
Finally had to get myself a tablet yesterday for work related stuff. First time I've owned one. Is there a way to, when using YouTube, remove the search bar at the top of the screen when viewing full screen? I find it very annoying...
I tried downloading the YouTube app which allows me to do that but then no longer allows me a choice of what resolution I want to watch the clip in.
So, in short, I would like to watch completely full screen you tube videos and still have a choice of picture quality available to me. Or does the app automatically pick the best picture available unlike the normal website? If that's the case then no bother.

Just read this sequence for the first time. The advice was good. Based on my experience using Windows since 3.1, short of buying a new computer you have two choices: 1) Reformat the hard drive then reinstall windows and all your software, or, 2) Pay someone to do #1.
The core architectural decisions made about the first version of windows are still with it. That's why windows machines get slower and slower. Some think incompetence is responsible. Others say Microsoft did it to motivate users to buy a windows upgrade at the least or a new machine and a new version of windows at best.
Just arrived back from a short holiday in Denmark. Got my laptop stolen on my way home, so had to buy a new one, and install all new programs again. I guess it will take a week to restore everything, but luckily I had a backup on an extern hard disk.
YouTube was working fine in DK, but now I´m here in Thailand again, it will just show a black screen, and it docent matter what I want to look at. So my question is, have it been blocked here in Thailand ?
Maybe this old dog learning a new trick will be helpful to others.
I've installed more versions of Windows on more machines than I can remember. Bought a new netbook to replace the dying one. The new one came with FreeDOS and documentation entirely in Thai. Not a problem.
[unspecified amount of time solving problems omitted here]
New PC doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, but I have an external one. It worked on 3 machines. My bootable disks of Linux, Win 7 and FreeDOS all worked on the existing laptop and the dying netbook. Linux and FreeDOS worked on the new netbook but Win 7 didn't. Then I noticed the BIOS had a frackin' OS setting, with 2 options: Win 7 and Win 8. Guess what the factory default setting was?
I have subscription to ilikehd.com on my computer and it was working fine until yesterday. I don't know what I have done but I got on it this morning to watch the World Cup and I am getting the message, "Sorry, this service is available in Thailand only!"

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.
Are you connected through a VPN or Proxy, perhaps to view content only available in your home country? If so, you probably need to disconnect before using ilikehd

Can anyone help?
