Maybe we have both been lucky BB. Despite me saying I will never again use the minivan taxis, I recently did. To be fair, both the trip to Bangkok as well as the return trip were fine. Both drivers drove at a reasonable speed and at no time did they take any stupid chances. Having said that, I am still not convinced so will continue to avoid them as much as possible.

3 car pile up around 10-30 am today at the bottom of the flyover to Hwy 4,
just after Cha-Am.
The 3 cars were all in the right hand lane just next to where the u-turn road veers to the left. I cannot understand how shite like this happens. It is a straight section of dual carrigeway, and is visible from well back up the road. One of the cars was our favorite well known Toyota whatsit, but as they were moving the wrecks I could not be sure just which order they were in before it happened. I doubt that anyone was killed, but it should never have happened. :?

Speeding and reckless driving rank top of all the complaints against public buses

More than 800 public buses were found to be involved in speeding and 19 drivers were caught driving beyond the four-hour limit at a time without taking a break during the December 30-January 2 safety campaign period, said Mr Thirapong Rodprasert, director-general of Land Transport Department, on Saturday.

Moreover, he disclosed that 631 public buses were found to be not in good working conditions but yet they were put into services by their operators during the same period.

He said that the department had imposed fine on all these road safety offenders without exception. He vowed that officials concerned would strictly enforce the safety measures throughout the safety campaign period during the New Year’s festival which is due to end today.

20 passengers injured in a tour bus accident
About 20 passengers of a Transport Company’s tour bus bound for Phrae province from Bangkok were injured when the bus overturned after the driver reportedly tried to avoid a head-on collision with two racing motorcycles.

The accident took place about 2 am on Monday on a detour route near Wat Wang Hin, Tambon Chomthong, Muang district of Phitsanuloke.

All the passengers were later rushed to Ruam Paet and Inter Vechakarn hospitals in Phitsanuloke for medical treatment.

One of the passengers, Mrs Charuwan Rattananont, said she felt the bus shaking before it ploughed into a ditch in the middle of the road and turned one side up.

The driver, 43-year old Mr Apichai Saowakhon, claimed that he saw two racing motorcycles were heading toward his direction and decided to make a sudden swerve to avoid hitting the motorcycles. However, the road there was under repairs and made it difficult for him to control the bus resulting it to lose control and plunge into the ditch.

However, police said that they had to question the passengers first and would subject the driver to breathalyzer to find out whether he was drunk while driving or not.

Three killed, 17 injured as van rams at back of parked bus
Three people were killed and 17 others injured when a van rammed into the rear of a parked bus on Friendship highway in Nakhon Ratchasima province on Monday.

The three included the driver of the van from Kalasin, Somchai Paiwanao, 42, and a four-year-old boy whose body was thrown out of the van from the impact.

Highway police said the road mishap happened at about 2 am today near Kilometres 72-73 on the inbound traffic lane to Bangkok on the Friendship highway at Tambon Nong Sarai.

The Ubon-Bangkok was parked on the right shoulder of the highway after it broke down.

The driver of the van might not notice the parked bus on the right while overtaking another vehicle and rammed into its back which penetrated into the traffic lane.

The driver and two passengers in the van died and 17 others were injured.

The injured were later taken to Pakchong Nana and Bangkok Pakchong hospitals for treatment.

One injured passenger said they chartered the van to Bangkok to work from Nakhon Phanom.

The van left at 4 pm and during the night he noticed that the van ran like the snake going to the right and to the left all the time indicating the driver might be sleepy.

Highway police said they detained the bus driver for reckless parking on the right shoulder of the highway with the bus rear penetrating into traffic lane, thus causing deaths to others.
