Ketchup on F&C is a crime against nature IMHO. :guns:
Tartar sauce almost as bad :cuss:
When my mum made F&C (battered one week, bread crumbs the other) we called the scraps "scrumpty bits".
My mum used her fat over and over, kept it in the pot in a dark cupboard.

Agree about Ketchup on F&C, but on chips alone it is Alloy, Alloy.
As for the fat in a cupboard, my mum used to do the same, but we called it dripping or lard - I can smell the chip pan now ... Mmmmm

Regarding the fat, two very different things - dripping is derived from the fat of beef, whereas lard is derived from the fat of pork, but the common denominator is that they both make very tasty chips!!

Way, way too much for me these days alas

 Reminds me of my younger days when a few of use would go all night fishing off the rocks in Cape Town. Without fail there would be a few loaves of bread (not sliced) and several portions of chips from a nearby F&C shop. We used to break a loaf of bread in half, scoop out most of the inside and then stuff it full of chips, and of course some bread to round it off. No butter so it used to be as dry as hell, but that problem was always solved by washing it down with wine.  Naturally we never really caught much fish, but they were certainly good times.

BTW Richard, you could have had chip butties as well when you were in Cape Town, but you would have had to ask for a "bunny chow". Back in the day, this was a poor man's kebab, enjoyed after a night on the piss, or at least it was for my mates and I. :thumb:

British put vinegar on their chips, Americans put ketchup on them.
French-Canadians have another alternative.
POUTINE--this is chips with cheese curds and brown gravy and is hugely popular

Be careful ordering Poutine (Pooteen) because POUTAIN (Poootane)is F-C slang for hooker.

DocM

What's wrong with having a hooker with chips? After all, without a hook (er) you wouldn't catch a fish

Re the lard...When I was a boy, our chip pan only got refreshed when there were visible signs of a mouses paw prints!

Where exactly is Bar Tender. I used to see a sign but on my last couple of trips up soi 94 I didn't see it. Did it move and is there a new name? Someone said it was next door to where it used to be, but I don't remember now where I saw the sign before so is there something there now to mark the new location?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

There's a rumour going round that somebody once put mayonnaise on their chips.
