Thailand tourism situation
Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
I agree that Dec is mid season not high season and that Jan-Feb-Mar is HIGH season, but bars that have been in business for years and compare DEC figures to other DEC figures are apprehensive as they are down significantly.
Re: Collapse of rouble having effect?
I agree HHTel but this thread is about Thai tourism and the Russian component. The Russians have been a considerable factor in the numbers for the last few years. General opinion was--European tourists are down but, no problem, the Russians and Chinese are taking their place. That may not be as true this year.
Incidentally, I have not noticed many Chinese tourists in HH, apparently they are quite noticeable in Pattaya.

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
Over the last 3-4 days or regular 'migratory' customers have returned..& within 5 mins their bar-chat topic has swung round to "Where the hell is everyone this year?"..as they look out along Bintabaht.

You are correct Dr. Mike. I really must start reading these threads twice before I post. I'm definitely getting old!
Re: Collapse of rouble having effect?
I've noticed quite a few Russian property companies springing up over the last few years and I imagine it must be having a big effect on them, you might pay 40% more for a holiday but not many people would for a house.

exactly, families spend much more than single people, also the money they spend is normally with more reputable business that pay taxPleng wrote:A hotel for which the daily bill room rate is more often than not more than the average bar-crawler will spend in an entire week...europtimiste wrote:STEVE G, you are wrong, they are not spending one Baht in the morning. They are eating all they can at breakfast at their hotel, spending the day at the beach with some drinks and no food. After an early dinner, again one drink each in a bar....

I think adammike hit the nail on the head...I've been here for many years and year on year for the past 5-6 years the numbers have been falling (Cha-Am.)
Lots of people I know in the UK, who are holding down decent jobs, just can't afford those holidays now.

The sharp devaluation of Russia's rouble has dealt a big blow to Thai tourism with falling reservations from Russian tourists during this high season......

I thought the majority of Russian tourists arrived at that airport just outside Pattaya and the package holiday included food - generally at Russian owned establishments. I well recall seeing them breeze into a bar, order a soft drink with ice and then open a bottle of Vodka they had bought at say 711.dozer wrote:http://www.bangkokpost.com/business/tou ... a-big-miss

There may have been many of them but except for some clothing I doubt they spent very much. Those with real money went to Phuket and as you say some came to Hua Hin as tourists/home buyers

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
Yes but this is the high end market and these tourists have the cash to go where ever they want, and I really do not think it applies to the *** establishments in anything like the same way.yabz wrote:Occupancy in the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok has fallen 34% over the last year and their profits have fallen 117%. Its probably a bellwether for the tourist sector. The management doesn't have any doubt about the reason:
The reason of net loss for financial results in the third quarter year 2014 compared to net
profit for the same quarter in year 2013 due to the announcement of martial law on 20
May 2014 and followed by declaration of a military coup on 22 May 2014 had an
immediate impact on the bookings and resulted in multiple cancellations. Travel advisory
notices were announced by many countries not to travel to Thailand due to security.
Businessmen and travelers postponed and cancelled their trips to Bangkok as well as the
events and meetings were cancelled which resulted in less room reservation but increased
cancellations. Revenue from food and beverage and other were also decreased. This
situation continued from second to third quarter.

Re: Thailand tourist slump continues
^^ In Bangkok is not only the 4* and 5* hotels that are suffering. My company has many visitors and probably books 60-80 room nights per month against all classes of hotels 2-4* and I can assure you that the occupancy rate is down. Same for restaurants, very easy to book even those that normally you need to book weeks in advance.
My Region uses Bangkok for most of it's meetings and we are bombarded by special offers for meeting deals right now. Each hotel willing to undercut competitors pricing.
It may be a different story in Hua Hin but my guess is that they are suffering also from a decline in "corporate meetings" corporate golf competitions etc as well as the normal tourist bookings

I do not know what company you are representing in these figures but they would appear to be business related, if so, I thought this thread was tourist related because business is a totally different matter.Bristolian wrote:^^ In Bangkok is not only the 4* and 5* hotels that are suffering. Blimey, everyone's a mod these days!
Consider yourself suitably chastised, Bristolian, and don't let it happen again...

This is the way

^^
no issue DM... I'm used to being chastised. But it would help if some posters understood how the tourist numbers were collated. It would also help if they followed the thread.
Let me spell it out more clearly....
If hotels have a lower occupancy rate there are less people staying in the hotel.
Probably equal to less tourists... In my humble opinion.
By the way of creeping.... Our Mods do an excellent job. I'm sure that if they need to have more we will see a recruitment poster.
