Seven years is damn good going out of a battery these days - they're designed to operate for three at best and have a built in charge cycle redundancy to make them obsolete - Apple showed the world how to do that!
My Kindle Touch battery also 7 years so here's hoping it will continue for a little longer

I've tried numerous cables, including the new one that came with the device. no luck with any of them.

Maybe you need to try another computer.

Obviously something is wrong, and it has to be a process of elimination.

PET, you're a star yet again.

With that above software, I've managed to transfer almost 900 books from the old Kindle. That'll stop any alcoholic tendencies, as I was straying that way over the past week without a functioning device!!

On a final note regarding my old Kindle Paperwhite, I took it in to a computer shop when back for a quick visit to the UK and was told that the device is glued down so the back of the bloody thing is not supposed to be detachable. The computer shop wouldn't damage their reputation by trying to look inside.

I suppose that goes with buksi's comment above and the damn things are disposable. Amazon never told me that!!

I live and learn and the new one is working fine.

And the saga of the old Kindle continues and there's a happy ending.

The boyfriend of a neighbour's daughter came round to see me last night. He's looking for work in HH and is university educated in computer/network security and repairs. He has an interview with a hotel in town later in the week and wanted some tips about interview technique.

As we were going through his cv, I thought I'd have a bit of fun with him and brought the old Kindle out. "Bet you can't fix this". He asked to give it a try overnight and has just returned it, working and fully charged. The port was knackered in some way.

Unbelievable. Two experienced computer repair shops, one in HH and one back in the UK wouldn't touch it and it took all of a few hours for this young chap to get it going again.

At least I don't have any doubts about the abilities he claims to have (not that I know much about computers). I've seen the results with my own eyes.

Hats off to him. I've got a smile on my face for once.

Just found a good website for downloading free ebooks while I was searching for the 'Remembrance of Earth's Past' trilogy in English.

https://b-ok.cc/

Enough sci-fi to keep me happy for years, no ads, no scammy links, instant downloads ... enjoy.

Edit: it seems to be limited to 5 downloads per IP address per 24 hours. A quick flip of the VPN switch solves that!

That site seems good, I haven't managed to actually get anything to open off it yet but I think that's more to do with my IT skills! I've downloaded a couple of books to my mobile but I'm not sure how to get them to the Kindle now, can you do it via bluetooth?

Cheers, Buks.

I've just downloaded a book via the above and it was quick and easy. It didn't seem to go through a torrent client but just went straight to my hard drive. I hadn't been able to find the book on 1377x or P Bay.

You might enjoy it - Gabriel Krauze - Who They Was. An autobiographical book by a Pole who got involved with the London gang scene from an early age but has left it behind now. Was long listed for a Booker this year. Supposedly pretty hard hitting and obviously realistic.

I'm looking forward to seeing what other gems the above site has in store.

Agreed..

Managed to download some books that just weren't listed on my usual suspects.

Thank's I'll try to set that up, I don't have access to a personal computer at the moment, just a mobile phone and Kindle.
(Like 90% of my life, the only computer I have is in Thailand and I doubt I'll be seeing that any time soon!)
I'll try to set up the email address for the Kindle and send the files to that.

Update: Yes, that's fine, I was able to set up the kindle email address using the Kindle App on my phone and as long as you get .mobi files, they appear on the Kindle when you synch it.

Yes, 5 downloads a day as an ordinary member. Sign up and get 10 a day or "contribute" and get unlimited.

I haven't followed the 10 a day sign up link but really I'm happy with 5. Hell, with the best will in the world, I can't read 5 books a day and I normally keep a list of books downloaded to the hard drive and then when they get to 10 or so, transfer them to the Kindle under a collection.

So, with new releases, I should be able to get them on 1377x or PB. However, that new site will be the go to back up.

For instance, I'm a believer in William Boyd. One of our English great contemporary writers. One of his earlier books "Any Human Heart" is well rated but I've never found it on the internet. Until today. It was one of the 5 titles I downloaded.

Fill my book boots - so far.
