It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

Well just to keep this amusing thread going there is something missing in all these places.
We've had the pros and cons of the type of fish, type of batter/breadcrumbs, type of peas, vinegar ketchup and mayonnaise BUT no one has mentioned the most important free side dish of them all. SCRAPS.
Not seen anywhere now that does 'em and I suspect not many owners will know what you are talking about. Richard (RIP), who used to run the one down near the Chinese temple road to the beach and later up near the railway track always provided them if you asked.

I'd never heard of scraps until I moved to the North East. I think it must be a Northern thing (don't forget, coming from Plymouth, anywhere North of Yelverton is 'Northern').

Nonsense, I used to supplement school dinners with them at the F&C shop next to Dr Zoob's surgery in Webb's Rd, London SW11 - very happy memories!Big Boy wrote:I'd never heard of scraps until I moved to the North East. I think it must be a Northern thing

Re: Fish and Chips
We had scraps in Sussex; used to keep us going until we got home after school.
Re: Fish and Chips
As I pointed out - you're all Northerners.

Coming from further south than Plymouth, I'll support what Big Boy says. I too, never had scraps until visiting 'way up north'

Re: Fish and Chips
We had them in Kent too - must be southern soil there? - although we asked for them as spare chips that had missed the bag, together with the bits of discarded crunchy fish batter. Our local used to cook on a coal fired fryer and she used to use block lard (or dripping) and the taste was fantastic - maybe thats because I'm not sure whether she washed her hands in between stoking the fire and battering the fish?Big Boy wrote:As I pointed out - you're all Northerners.

Scrumpty bits, my mum called them. She was a Bristolian.richard wrote:Well just to keep this amusing thread going there is something missing in all these places.

Scraps in West London too when I was growing up, 5p a bag. When I think about my early teenage years I have a strong recollection of chip shops and girls, and it reminds me of Space Invaders and fish. I associate chippy's with Space Invaders
I see on the recently vacated Bar Tender spot one of them pizza clay oven affairs (I think!?), the Italian restaurant guy is expanding onto that outside 'gardeny' area.

You're giving your age away Dr Mike!! Of course, proper fish and chips only came wrapped in newspaper, but then came along H&S and put a stop to it.Dr Mike wrote:Lots more to discuss. We've done, Fish, Chips,Peas, Scraps, Vinegar, Ketchup.

Re: Fish and Chips
Good quiz question there - when were (British) F&C shops prohibited from using newspaper as wrapping?
My guess would be 1967. -ish!
