Well, the Coronavirus has certainly turned sport on it's head. The
Pro14 league kicks off this evening (UK time) with Zebre hosting Cardiff, Scarlets away to Leinster and Ulster hosting Benetton - just 2 weeks after the 2019-2020 season final was played!
Note to DM - Leinster vs Scarlets being shown on S4C (KO 20:15).
Only 12 teams will begin the tournament rather than the usual 14, with both South African teams (Cheetahs & Southern Kings) missing. No decision has been made on when South African teams will again join the league, but it will not be before 2021. Here it gets a bit more complicated - the Southern Kings have gone into administration and therefore will not be re-joining the league - another team (undecided) will take their place. However, there is a good chance that two further teams will join
before the end of the season
making it the
PRO16!!
The idea of the enlarged tournament has stemmed from New Zealand confirming a repeat of their own
Super Rugby Aotearoa for the 2021 season and Australia therefore expected to repeat their own domestic tournament with the
Super Rugby AU competition...... Who knows!!
