My daughter just read the notice. In summary, New Year celebrations are cancelled. Clubs, bars and Karaoke establishments are to close from 31st (tomorrow) until Jan 6th.

So initially just a 1 week lockdown.

No mention of whether beaches are closed and on other websites the intercontinental is saying their firework show is still on (in which case I presume other hotels will be the same). I would be surprised if the beach is still open, but there was no explicit mention of it (afaik).

I think I posted on the Covid Hua Hin thread yesterday that TAT are asking people to stay off the beach, and watch from outside their houses. Alternatively there will be a live feed of the fireworks (URL on poster).

Can one of our clever Thai readers please clarify?
No mention of banks. Officials to check cleanliness of service station and like. It's a very fuzzy photocopy. The first clause 3 should be c lause 1. Was this an OCR translation? Clause 1 is essentially about gambling places - cock fights and fighting fish.

The checkpoint by the airport was certainly operational by 5.30, and there were dozens of officials with various uniforms.

Also the jail term is 3 years.

I found a PDF of the order which is easier to read. I see no mention of a lockdown, only the 3 sections about shutting cock fighting and fish fighting down; closing bars, pubs and karaoke; and making sure filling stations are clean and sanitary.

We went through at 19:30. It was manned, but the only movement was the usual fork and spoon to mouth.

Tuesday the checkpoint tent was back in place, by the airport before Makro, lhs if going from Cha Am to Hua Hin
But at 13.30h they were just sitting eating, yet on our way back around 15.00h we saw a lot of police officers in middle of the road checking cars
Nothing on the way to Cha Am side
Also yesterday, Wednesday, no checking around 13.00, maybe the virus does not manifest itself during lunchtime...

Well that’s very strange because we passed Makro at just gone 9.30 yesterday morning and there was no tent up, just some bollards in the lanes and nobody stopping or checking anyone. I did notice a lot of vehicles parked on the hard standing to the left but that was it. Anyway, it would seem as though something is operating now (albeit maybe not at breakfast and lunchtime hours!!)

Yes, unfortunately the Thai Government make it very difficult for non-Thai readers to know what is going on. OCR of an out of focus letter is often the best that is available, which is why I usually ask for confirmation from the clever people.

This might change things. The barge has broken it's anchor, and tugs chasing.

Big Boy wrote: Tue Dec 29, 2020 6:45 pm "Panic" is a very strange word to use in context with Thailand and Covid. This is not Europe, and as such I'm not aware of anybody panicking

To me, panic was clearing the supermarket shelves as per the European model. It became apparent very early on in the pandemic that Thais didn't have the money to panic. In extreme cases of hardship, I've seen the local community helping out nicely. This country is most definitely not panicking.
Seems that the word panic has another meaning in english.
For me panicking is what I see by some farangs staying at home, not going have a drink outside, not buying at the markets and ordering home delivered food. That's a sad and really stupid behavior and some farangs are doing this since several months.
