Re: The Digital Surgery (computer questions/problems here)
Thanks for the many answers that I will try to answer. First, it may be seen as trivial and not just forget the problem and buy a new one, as I can, but at my age and raised in a time when it was important to take care of what we had I do not quite agree with that part of this new modern world.Another thing is that the computer is not yet 2 years old. Hmm .... I remember the first notebook I had, it cost the equivalent of 75K Baht but it lasted for 10 years.

No label here and as said OS preinstalled.hhinner wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 11:20 pm ^^ You should be able to activate using the product key on the label on the underside of the laptop (if it's still there), assuming it's the same version of windows.
This should help:
Google Microsoft support activate windows 10
Choose one of the support.microsoft.com links about activation.

If you go to one of the 'reputable' software companies online, please read their small print. I was looking at legitimising my MS Office, and their prices looked too good to be true. Their wording basically doesn't provide a guarantee, and if your passcode stops working, you need to contact MS direct. Basically, many of them are selling pirated software at a lot more than the going rate for pirated software.

Btw, will send you a Pm.

Hmm .. maybe it was illegalgeorgy wrote: ↑Tue Sep 28, 2021 7:48 am Win10 will activate itself if no change in hardware.
A SN is required only when the previous installation was illegal.
Original Win10 key is below 20 EUR, why bother with fake.
You can download the original from MS website.
To reinstall you have to boot from a CD or stick.

You don't need a license to download or install Windows, only to activate it. The OEM version should still work if you have that activation code (usually on a sticker on the back of the laptop).Hahuahin wrote: ↑Tue Sep 28, 2021 9:10 amBut then I need a licence, which I not havebuksida wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 3:27 pm You can download Windows from M$ - install it, then just pay for the license online if you want a legit version. https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/softwar ... /windows10. Windows come preinstalled, I think its called the OEM version or was it called FFP version of windows OS.

Re: The Digital Surgery (computer questions/problems here)
I didn't realize the laptop is only 2 years old. They stopped putting product key stickers on computers some time ago, the windows licence information being embedded in the computer firmware (BIOS/UEFI). Unless the hardware has changed and the Windows version (Home vs Pro, for example) is the same the new installation should be activated when the computer goes online.
If the computer shop just copied a hard disk image to your laptop, rather than going through the installation process, this might prevent proper activation as information in the registry may disagree with UEFI info. It may be worthwhile downloading an iso from Microsoft and doing a fresh install. Or asking a tech (like Dom) to do it for you.
Microsoft's policy on illegal copies seems to have changed in recent years and updates will still happen. Of course, illegal copies will not be eligible for upgrade to Windows 11.

Discussion here takes much longer than a new installation...
Then you will see if it activated itself or not.
You can get an authentic activation key for a few EUR or dollars. Amazon, ebay etc

Re: The Digital Surgery (computer questions/problems here)
Hi Guys and Girls,
Hopefully someone can help ...... I can get the internet, but sometimes it seems to "click" off just for a nana second and I may get something like the following message, "www.huahinforum.com unexpectedly closed the connection." It either automatically comes back or a quick refresh does the trick.
The biggest problem though is on facebook messenger ..... I use this for video calls to my wife, however today we cannot video call each other.
Any simple and quick fixes would be appreciated. I have tried rebooting both the router and the computer.

I would try using a VPN to get away from whatever Thai isp you’re using. They clog things up sometimes with all their content checking.

It seems this case involves a ~2 years old laptop. For relatively new portables, many manufacturers provide a factory backup on a small HD partition, and store the 'activation key' in the UEFI.Hahuahin wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 3:54 pm I tried myself a few days ago to be a computer technician.(manually cleaning the registry)That didn't went well so I needed help. Okay, long story short, impossible to recover Windows OS so a copy got installed which I accepted. Anyone know if a copy Windows OS will be compatible with any Internet security systems and eventually Vpn which I both have paid subscriptions for and used before the Pc collapse

Since you previously had Windows 10 installed and activated, during the installation process skip the steps which ask for a product key and select the option 'I am Reinstalling Windows 10 on this PC'. Activation will not be an issue because Microsoft activation servers already know about it. It seems that option was missed during setup, so try this. Open a command prompt window and run this Powerscript snippet:
wmic path softwarelicensingservice get oa3xoriginalproductkey

Hi PeteC,
Thanks for your suggestion, any help is always appreciated.
I'm not sure what I've done, but it seems to be working OK for now!
I'll bear in mind the VPN suggestion for next time, as I'm sure it'll happen again!

I missed out on this reply, hadn't checked this forum for some days but thank you for replying. Anyway I tried and as you say a key coming up but I don't dare to mess with the now installed copy version besides the laptop come with windows 10 Home the copy version installed now is windows 10 Pro and as far as I understand I will need to reinstall the same OS as the current OS!laser wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 8:10 pmIt seems this case involves a ~2 years old laptop. Re: The Digital Surgery (computer questions/problems here)
Anyone tackled the new Google Drive back up yet?
Ive set mine up to backup 'Documents' form my computer(pictures/vids to G photos) as i think most people would
however there is a folder from Docs i want to exclude which is the Vuze downloads i get from the usual places
no need for them to be backed and use up a ton of space
any ideas how i filter this folder out of the back up regimen?
TIA
