My wife and i stayed in HH for 1 night for new year 31st , the walk from soy 51 to the night market on the pavement was near impossible and like walking through a war zone .
The pavement had been encroached on by street shops and when we found a piece of pavement to walk on it was broken. This would not be tolerated in the UK and it spoilt our stroll down to Town , it must be infuriating for the residents I'm sure.

It would not be tolerated in the UK ??
Thats why we're here - its not the UK
The wind blows cold on brake and heath
The weeping willows cry
The mountains dark are jagged teeth
Against a leaden sky.

I've told you a million times not to exaggerate

No it wouldn't be tolerated in the UK, which fortunately is thousands of miles away. Equally the UK's 100,000 Baht/year council tax (ok, it would be relative) for a similar area, which partly goes towards the upkeep of the pavements would also not be tolerated here.

That's why it's CHEAP to live here, funnily enough.

Yes, another nanny state with over prescriptive Health & Safety rules is not needed, thanks.
It would be goodbye to all roadside food vendors as having toilet and handwashing facilities on each trolley would be difficult and goodbye to Tuk Tuks and travelling in open pick-ups. Goodbye to everything almost !!

Most of what's mentioned on this recent section of the thread once again goes back to corruption and mai pen rai.

If the sidewalks were designed and constructed properly, they would last 20 years. However, budgets are skimmed, poor materials and workmanship used, and Mr. Big's cousin has to be kept employed on a regular basis.

To my knowledge every city has regulations on the books as to where and how street vendors can operate. The rules are just never enforced.

Sewage in the sea, yes, HH has fallen behind like Pattaya did but they will catch up. They'll have no choice when it gets too bad. Pattaya now has 3 facilities to my knowledge with 2 more being built. The bay is much cleaner and clearer now then it was a few years ago. However, the plants break down, take months to get fixed and it appears staffed by the cousins of Mr. Big again. Pete

I'd rather be negotiating HuaHins' pavements than sliding all over our UK ones at the moment! We may be able to maintain pavements here (after a fashion) but local authorities are rapidly running out of grit to keep even the main roads clear.

It is understandable that HH has a small and may be none existent budget to maintain pavements , this in its self is not the problem .
It is the shops that go in to the area designated for walking, and is not their land ,and make would be customers that go there either walk through the maze of obstacles or have to walk in the road .
One shop owner even parked his/her SUV on the pavement. I realize the good people of HH don't like criticism of their beloved town but it would be nice to be able to walk about and enjoy HH on foot. Thank you.

PS . Chopsticks i am not referring to food vendors it is the shop that thinks that they can use the pavement as their own property and make us walk in the road . Thank you.

Thats true, TIT and not TIUK

Well, not really need to have toilet on their trolley.
My idea would be a public toilet at every area the trolleys are allowed to stay.
Lucky enough no one asks me...

Thats true, and goodbye to the highest death rate IN THE WORLD (compared to the cars on the road). Thai officials are often claiming the high death rate and how it can decrease. Could be so easy to decrease it, if they really wanted it.

Back to the subject of Satukarn Square, the sidewalk or pavement on the main road by there is now in a particularly bad condition. It looks as if it was damaged during the demolition.

Most developing countries have the same problems as Thailand.
There's no welfare state so people have to try and earn a living even if it means ignoring some of the 'nice to have' rules and regulations.
Try Singapore if you're looking for Western standards in an Asian setting.

Blimey, jam packed with info that page ... why a professional hotel chain needs Google ads for competing hotels on its web pages is beyond me!
