The man is, clearly, a charlatan.
No, the complainant is without substance nor, indeed, argument.
I am surprised, however, that someone as erudite as yourself could protest that," i though (sic) dawebo explained himself pretty well".
i fully respect your right to defend yourself :thumb:
i've never ordered a steak in my life, never mind a chateaubriand (never eaten red meat).
i have no idea of the procedures of cooking such an obvious delight to some, but charlatan? surely you read the original post correctly?
dawebo's main gripe was that he suspected the 'chateaubriand' was pre cooked & reheated! :?
maybe it arriving 10 minutes later becomes more feasible? a la microwave! :(

my point was more directed towards the 'cowardly' & 'anonymity' aspect.:?

having read the post again, i don't quite believe it's a cowardly attack, nor do i think it's particularly scathing, just a simple portrayal of a less than satisfactory experience whilst dining out.
i'm sure it's happened to all of us at one time or another.

the shield of anonymity surrounds most of us, so there's no real argument there. :|

we can't expect to see only positive reviews, no matter what the subject.
as much as we'd like it, everything can't be perfect all of the time :thumb:

Dining out

Post by Chas »

I like hearing about people's experiences eating out in Hua Hin . .good or bad!

We tend to eat out with friends a lot and have never eaten at the Brasserie. Based on the OP's review, we might hesitate to bring friends along for a first experience, but would still be inclined to go on our own sometime and give it a shot. I concur with a previous poster that you read the good and the bad and make up your own mind.

I also sympathize with the plight of the OP. Been there many times myself. Out with friends and/or family . .something is not quite right . . .do you interrupt the festivities and "make a scene". .however delicately done including seeking out and speaking privately to the owner . .or do you just carry on and try to gloss over the defects, keep the mood of the party up and not spoil the evening for your guests or yourself? Or do you allow the poor food and/or service to distract you? It is NOT an easy decision to make. Given the OP's situation I would probably have done the same as he did.

I admit that I am spoiled by Marriot's "service standards" and have become more aware over the years when this impeccably high standard is not met, but I just deal with minor lapses by working around them or ignoring them. I also know enough to look around and see what is going on in the room. Just yesterday at Anantara breakfast, it was obvious that they were very short-staffed . .so patience was required. Again at Black Canyon, we watched my club sandwich, for which we had waited a long time go to another table that had come in after us. . .and when another arrived at my table, it wasnt as well made as usual . ..but like the OP we decided to just get on with life and not make an issue of it. We just wont go back anytime soon.

While not in the same class as Brasserie, we have come to really like Backyard Steak on Petchkasem road heading north. Friendly staff/ owners, buffet for 159 baht including two kinds of cake for dessert . .( yes, CAKE) and beef/pork/chicken steaks . .. beef steak is the thin Thai kind though, not the 1 inch slab of beef. (No corkage charge either.)

In previous thread about steak Café de Paris has been much lauded. So most likely it was an isolated
incident the OP faced. See the thread for yourself:

In my experience CdP is not only splendid food. It is a pleasurable experience as a whole, with the ambiance,
service and the location. In self-pampering it is well worth the money. However, Natha's food is now quite as
good and is half the price, naturellement sans le location et le vista.

On the off topic part, we ate at Natha last night and the steak was quite good. Not an American style T-Bone, more the Thai style, less than one inch thick, but with nice seasonings and cooked to order. The house wine was not cold and sweet like usual, but a decent Italian table wine (don't expect too much!). The service was competent and very friendly, and our food arrived almost together - certainly no more than two minutes between plates.

GF praised the Thai food We'll both be happy to return for another meal.

Even further off topic, has anyone tried the small French restaurant up by Chinese Temple? I think it's 'Small Planet' or something like that.

(On topic part) Still haven't eaten at CdeP, but French friends have, and had no complaints. The Belgians are convinced they make better French food than the French, anyway.

I had an Australian Sirloin steak at Natta's tonight and was very pleased with the way is was cooked and served. Maybe as HHADFan said, the meat was a bit on the thin side, but it was large and very tasty. I would say is was good value for the money.

Yes, the house wine, an Italian Veneto wine made from merlot grapes, was a bit too warm and actually not a good selection for a steak. It would have been far better together with the duck they had as a special. I had an interesting discussion with the owner Nat, a very friendly Thai, about wine and made some suggestions to him with regards reasonable priced wines suitable together with steaks.

Perhaps a mod could split this thread and open one for the Natta restaurants.

Re: Brasserie de Paris. Not good experience

Post by pinkus »

Was there (Brasserie de Paris, huahin) last night on new years eve. Had booked a table for 4 persons, but one of us got sick the last minute and could not join. The owner came up to our table after we arrived and accused us for not letting him know about this earlier and said we still had to pay for 4 persons. We were all stunned and embarrassed by the owners unclassy and rude way of greeting us. Have never experienced this kind of treatment anywhere in the world.

The food was ok, but generally overpriced. The portions are very small and the cod we ate was over cooked. You can have far better cod at the Swedish restaurant in Hua Hin for less than half the price.

Have been to Hua Hin every winter for many years and have many friends here. Will never set my foot in this restaurant again, nor will I recommend it to anyone else.
