Well Orange, if you can't find something to read then you could always just drink beer, talk to girls, go adventuring, perhaps play pool and do stuff like that, which is what many do here and if you're with you family then I'm sure you can find other things to do with them on holiday at the sacrifice of a read or two. No sense getting your your bood pressure up over stuff like stuff to read.

BTW, your style of writing, lack of use of paragraphs, quick wit and a swift mention of AWOL within 20 posts coupled with a good understanding of many things here reminds me of another poster.

Could be an interesting, informative and pertinent discussion.

Oh yeah, sorry I only took 1,134 photos of last year's event, probably not enough for you - the better ones for those interested in the Jazz Fest can be found here: HHJF 2009, HHJF 2008, HHJF 2007, HHJF 2006 ...

Spitfire, I am sorry but you have me at a disadvantage as I have no idea who or what you are talking about. I asked about local reading material and have responded in kind to those who have posted on here. I did not mention Awol, someone else pointed me in that direction. I'm not stressed about this just confused, as this turned into something I really didn't expect. It seems I have been given the only information there is, plus a whole heap of advice and discussion that wasn't required other than to prevent me making an ass of myself on here. My initial pleasure at joining has quickly dissipated I can assure you.

Hmmmm......

In that case then do what I suggested in the first paragraph then. Getting all hot and bothered about whether you have something to read or not seriously suggests to me that you need to drink more beer and have more sex............................unless, of course there are other 'motives'.

Orange, you will find plenty of English/American magazines in many small book shops different places in Hua Hin.
Along Damnoern Kasem Rd close to Burger King is one and around the corner is another one. There are more shops that sell magazines and books written in English, you just have to look for it.
The two shops I mentioned is located in the E7 area. http://www.huahinafterdark.com/hua-hin-map.htm
A stall, just outside Tesco Lotus, sells Readers Digest + several other magazines in English (as far as I have seen), but I have never bought anything there myself.
This is not a problem!!

Thank you Norseman, that will be useful information; however while my initial question was general I did correct it later as I meant to ask about local publications - my fault as I wasn't clear in the first place. Still a bit bemused by some of the responses though.

Hi Orange - I agree with you that for a town like HH you would expect a range of publications. When the Observer started up - maybe 11 or 12 years ago now - it was a cheaply published mag which contained all the local events news, including darts and pool league results. As the town grew the mag of course grew, until, as you know, it went online.
I personally believe this has left a gap in the market which I think AWOL is intended to cover, and as a fairly new mag it seems to be doing OK - and could also grow.
One of the problems in HH though has always been an element of necessary caution and respect regarding what can acceptably be published, as it is the Kings Town. There has never been the option to publish anything like the Pattaya Mail for example.
Pete's suggestion about the Thai/English dictionary is good - I've always used the one he mentioned and find it useful. Pocket size for less than 250 baht from Asia Books - worth having IMO.
Despite them being broadsheets - with the obvious problems of an unwieldy newspaper - the Bangkok Post or Nation are worth the hassle for general Thailand news - and puzzles! A broader perspective on Thailand is always useful - there is more to life than HuaHin after all - and the BP does usually cover any major events in HH anyway.
Books/novels can be picked up at some bars on a loan or exchange basis. Billys Bar being one of the most popular - and handy for the main beach drag. It can after all be very expensive to buy new books and English language mags in Thailand. There are a few old threads about where to buy second hand books on here.

I think the Bangkok Post Sunday edition comes in tabloid book style. Pete

Hi Orange, was just giving you an honest opinion. Out of fairness I have since had a more thorough look at a number of copies, rather than one or two.
Unfortunately my previous comments were about right, there's just no Hua Hin related articles to read after the front page headlines. The local sports league updates, establishment offerings and upcoming events could be useful to some, although the latter can be found in many of the local printed media and on the Hua Hin forums.

Noticed that practically all of the other articles with content, apart from being non-Hua Hin related, were just copy/pastes from other websites, sometimes with the names and locations changed to lend a Thai slant. What happened to good old hard work eh :D

To be fair, and as previously said, it can't be easy producing content weekly seeing as Hua Hin's not exactly action city. I'm sure it could be improved and bought to life a bit with some local articles and less copy/pasting of overseas stuff.

You're welcome Orange - but it's maybe also worth mentioning a very relevant point about HH publications, which has already been touched on by SJ - quite simply the lack of things going on in HH day to day.
But it's not so much the lack of things going on IMO. More likely down to the (maybe little known) fact that most contributors to the local publications aren't paid.
I go back to the start of HHT, in about 2003 I think, when I embarked on a series of articles about visa runs. A subject which is quickly exhausted! There's only so much you can say about the road to Ranong after all - and times have changed.
But looking back - a 'roving' type reporter - on pay (needn't be a lot) could happily have got plenty of 'personal interest' type stories in HH simply by talking to people, be it new expat settlers or long term residents, to get their own stories and experiences. At that time there was scope for decent restaurant reviews, as well as the kind of stories which Richard now provides about life outside HH.
All that stuff now is catered for online by this forum, so whatever scope there was for more variety in the mags has quickly (and understandably) been eclipsed by technology. Which is fine if you don't mind getting sand in your Blackberry!
