Sad, I liked Satukarn even though I didn't go there much. It was a real symbol of downtown Hua Hin for many years... the price of progress is sometimes steep!

Hi there guys!

Ohhh my Buddha! This doeesn't Sound good for the (fairly) New Hua Hin Nadpob Market. I will come to Hua Hin next month (after my almost 7 month stint abroad) and the first thing to check out the state of former Satukarn square and the Best Western Hotel behind it.
From what I heard from y'all my Fellas that this place seems to be deserted with only a few shops remaining. I guess them planners didn't saw that coming.

There is clearly a desire in some quarters to see HH make a move 'up the scale'. If ever you needed evidence that the market just isn't yet there to support that move, then Nadpob is it, IMHO.

I like the old mall, too. The "Aladdin's Cave effect" is right on.
I also like the supermarket just across the tracks and Chat Chai as well.
I like to rummage around and pood len with the workers. Tesco in HH is as sterile as any mall back home and I can live without frozen food at stupid prices.

I don't remember when it opened but it did seem at the time it was foolish to open such a place at any time other than the beginning of the high season. Got the impression when I first walked in that either the architect who did the interior failed all known aesthetic tests or that it was designed for the shops to be knocked down and the space re-configured if it failed as a market.

Has anyone tried the seafood place facing Phetkasem, Deep Ocean or some such name like that?

I noticed that the old building on the corner across the street (next to the police station) has been knocked down. Anyone know what's going in there? ... a multi-story parking garage, I hope... :duck:

Well, I can't comment as I've never yet set foot in the place - can't see any reason I would want to. I've also never yet set foot inside Market Villa - again, no reason to. I have used Tesco, but only on about 10 occasions.

I buy all all groceries from the markets and side-of-the-road vendors, and also buy some stuff at the old shopping mall. And, I just love that big shop on the klong road that seems to sell everything.

I know some people argue that Tesco has a higher standard of hygiene than the street sellers, but in the ten years I've being buying meat at the markets, nobody in our family has got sick from eating it. I also like the idea that most of my money goes into the pockets of ordinary people who are simply trying to make a living. Ironically though, the Thais themselves tend to be completely addicted to shopping malls and 7/11's.

Everyday I see people driving past ten mom and pop shops to go to a 7/11, only to buy what they could have bought at any mom and pop shop, and it has nothing to do with saving money either because 7/11 always charges more in the first place.

That's exactly what Hua Hin needs. But it will never happen. It is much easier and cheaper just to double park, put the hazard lights on, and f-- you Jack, I`m alright. :guns:

Can't agree with that at all. 7/11 generally has a wider range of product, air conditioned comfort, more capacity for chilled product and so on. They may be sporadically cheaper, but I have never been charged 105 for a 100 baht phonecard in 7/11. Pricing in a 7/11 is always clear and on public display and you only need to feel you are being 'done' once at any given mom & pop shop, to feel you don't need to go back there. And if you hadn't noticed, the Thais shop in 7/11 too, so it isn't just a 'dual pricing' issue.

^ What he said! I used to shop at the mom and pop shops in my neighborhood and the stock was definitely limited to what Thais usually buy with no thought to all the foreigners living nearby. Now in the last couple of years two 7/11's opened within a short distance of my house and I rarely use the mom and pops anymore as they rarely have what I want.

I want Heineken or San Miguel, the mom and pops have Sing, Leo, and Chang. I want pistachio nuts, the mom and pops have peanuts, I want bread, the mom and pops have rice, etc., etc., etc., ... no comparison!

This thread is starting to drift somewhat. Can we get back to Nadpob Market please?

If anybody wishes discuss the merits of Ma & Pop shops against 7/11s, please feel free to start a new thread.

Sorry Big Boy, my posts wander nowadays just like my mind does! :?

Back to Nadpob (or is it Nabpob :D ). No one responded to my question about the seafood place. It looks nice but I guess people aren't going there. At least the building does have an underground parking garage which is a plus for the designers imo. :thumb:
