No thoughts of sarcasm whatsoever. It was a genuine question, and I'm grateful for a genuine answer - thank you. I was wondering because it looks a little classy in its black box.

I'm sorry guys, I've taken this a bit off topic. Can we get it back to the OP please? :offtopic:

You have obviously tried it then Spitfire. Not great by any stretch of the imagination.

BB in order to get back to topic. The 3 of us had our first drink at lunchtime, over 4 hours ago and are not dead that I have noticed. Statistically we are not sure why so will have a "drink about it" through this cool, breezy, sunday evening.

Driving whilst under the influence is not clever but I fail to see how I am going to crash the sofa or the sun lounger, never mind the hammock.

The Thai Health Promotion Foundation (Thai Health) has revealed a frightening figure, stating that drinking kills 26,000 people, an average of three per hour, each year.
I don't they're saying 'drinking kills 26,000 people' at all, think it's that alcohol is a 'contributing factor', was just a 'twist' by the media. And I it's possible that 25,999 of them people have never had a drink in their lives, the way they're measuring it. For example, if he driver of a big bus carrying 25,999 tee-totallers has an acc...(well ok, a gigantic bus then)... has an accident, and they find alcohol in his system/an empty can under his chair, then that is your 26,000 deaths from drinking a year

Also from their own report: "suicide among Thais is associated with alcohol use (35% of cases) because alcohol reduces decision-making ability. Therefore, alcohol use among those who have thought of death are at high risk of committed suicide" arf arf

Suicides, stabbings, shootings. drownings, accidents at work, electrocutions, falls all counted, I couldn't see any data for liver disease etc, it's just protectionism for local producers nothing more.

The Center for Alcohol Studies stated that Thailand imported 6.8-billion-baht's worth of alcoholic drinks each year; 80 percent of which were from Europe. The Center was worried that if the Thai-EU free trade negotiation, scheduled for next year did not set a limit on the import of spirits; more people would become addicted to alcohol.
Why not mention European imports represent just 8% of the countries total alcohol consumption? ...oh, my mistake they did... upcoming Thai-EU free trade negotiations

So their concern is about cheaper expensive imported alcohol and not .... "The by-volume taxation rate for white rice spirits is one-sixth of the maximum rate applicable to alcohol. White spirits, which make up the majority of alcohol consumed, was excluded from the tax increase in September"

Also read:
- Spirits represent 84% of total pure alcohol consumption, 75% of which is local 'white rice spirits', and only 3.9% from imports.
- Beer is 15% of total pure alcohol consumption, 92% of which is from the two leading two Thai brands.
- Wine is 1% of total pure alcohol consumption. No breakdown of import/domestic.

So by my crude reckoning, if you drink imported beer with wine in a pint glass, the 3 every hour goes too 3 every 1000 hours

Hello, my name is Paul, and I am ... writing this is defence of drinking beer & wine. If you drink in a moderately sustained and prolonged way, ensuring to practice personal safetly precautionns such as spending as many hours as possible inside bars, thereby reducing your time on the dangerous roads, then the risk level is less than significant. Statistically, you are more likely to die from either of the two causes of death associated with drinking plum juice, pyrrolizidine alkaloid posioning and being beaten to death by your own family for being dull.

I've used the Thai brandy Regency and the Thai rum Sangsom occasionally in mixed drinks and they seem to be of fair quality.
Personally, I rarely drink spirits - I drink them too fast and in too large a quantity, and would probably have added to the above statistics by now.
Big Boy, I used to have the same problem. When I first retired I had time, money, and a bar in my house so did a lot of experimentation with mixology. Within three or four years I could see that leading down the road to an early death. I found that sweet or easy drinking mixed drinks went down fast and I could end up consuming an entire bottle of a spirit such as vodka or tequila in a day. Now, I only have a shot of a decent single malt some evenings while only drinking dry wines or beer other times, usually at meals. I've found that I can sip a shot of good whiskey neat, with an ice cube, or a spritz of water for an hour and a half. In that time I would have had at least three margaritas or other tasty mixed drinks.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
