It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

mwbrown: Hua Hin is certainly a good place to start in Thailand, even if you ultimately move elsewhere. It's quite touristy, but that means you'll have access to plenty of restaurants, shopping, and other expats while you get your bearings.
Richard: Sargent was rather specific about Pranburi City. It was a joke. There may be one or more farangs aside from Sargent and myself living in Pranburi City, but it's unlikely. It's a very small area right around the train station. There are many westerners in Pranburi - they're always in Tesco buying things that make it obvious they live here. "Pranburi City" is a local Thai joke. Everything in Pranburi except the train station is elsewhere, but because the station is here, this is "Pranburi City". The station has a surprisingly large parking lot which is mostly empty except for the Saturday night market. Pranburi City is like a little village and in three directions from here, you hit a large bustling town. In the fourth direction, you hit a large but quiet highway that is perfect for cycling. The train station is mostly distinguished by how few trains stop there.
Pranburi City story: The first night we stayed here, my girlfriend walked to a little store around the corner and bought me a couple of beers and some snacks, etc. We were watching TV when we heard a lady outside yelling, "Does a farang live here?".
I walked out to the gate and asked, "What's the problem?"
"Your girlfriend bought some stuff at my shop, and she paid my father and he has no idea what anything costs and just says whatever comes to mind. Here's the rest of your change." She handed me 24 baht, smiled and walked away.

Good point. Anyone considering the "quiet life" well away from town should rent for a good long while before even thinking about investing in a house. It took me over a year to decide to move down here and I very definitely rent and doubt I would ever buy this house.MrPlum wrote:Even being 15 minutes away can be a disincentive to going into town. nope richard you dont suffer from thatLast word syndrome
Ito your superior knowledge. Apologies. I've only been meeting with friends in Pranburi for 10 years or so. I guess after 18 months you know everyone and everything about Pranburi. Sarge, you seem to be the font of all knowledge in Thailand. Marriages, integration, Hua Hin and now Pranburi. We all salute you

keepI know of at least 3 farang couples, and all forum members living there. You are not king of the Pranburi castle yet. Get your facts right

Re: Hello from newbie with big plans
Well it looks like I stirred the pot a bit...
To the points that have been brought up:
- No worries about burning bridges at home. My house is so undervalued compared to my mortgage, I'm happy to give it back to the bank and walk away. No incentive to stay. If I ever get homesick or need to leave the country in a hurry, I can jump on a plane and start again here.
- I definitely plan on renting at the beginning, and probably for all of my life from now on. See point 1 about home ownership. I won't be building any equity, but you see how that worked out for me... I also want to stay very mobile and renting gives me that flexibility.
- I appreciate everyone's comments on life in HH and locations to the north or south - this is exactly the kind of information I was hoping to get from the experts! I am looking for a kind of laid-back small city life, just busy enough to provide everything I need but not Los Angeles East. I'm willing to give HH a chance to convince me to stay.
- Motorbike will be my primary means of transport, looking forward to tinkering with an electric one too. barrys - I have a blog showing my electric Porsche 914 project - just read from the oldest posts forward. I can't post the link but do a Google search for "mike brown electric porsche 914". I just need a smaller motor and fewer batteries in a Honda Click or similar and I'm off in a shower of electrons!

Re: Hello from newbie with big plans
I know he's a joke (as do most people that have had to listen to him) and is supposed to have a sense of humour but who cares anyway. I know people who have lived in Pranburi a long time so it's THEM I listen to. Not a relative newbieHHADFan wrote:mwbrown:

Gentlemen. The occasional snipe and argument in the forum adds spice and is interesting to read. However you both now digress to point scoring for the sake of point scoring.
I think that you will never agree on anything and you both should accept that!
I am a newcomer to this forum and do not have the time or interest to check when this started. I enjoy posts from both of you when they are truly focused, informative and remain on track.
Nothing more I can say, from my point of view really, except please move on!

Bristolian
that post was in a way answering buksis article
I presume Bristolian that you come from bristol and would be equally pissed off with a ballon chasing barfly telling you you know nothing about it because he flew over it on a flight to cardiff and knows it all
and richard as for how did you put it ????? oh thats right Relative newbie bear in mind to me YOU are a relative newbie to Thailand and Hua Hin
and i dont take anything from untruthfull people after all what was it ah!!! thats it ---winter fuel allowance while living in thailand your own admission on this forum
then you should before throwing stones at BOTH partiesdo not have the time or interest to check when this started.
I posted that then and there was no pissing contest about itPost subject: Re: Pranburi train station community serves up its charms

Sorry i missed this Buksi i was in Hua Hin Hospital and then packing and moving to this veritable paradise approximately 300 yards from the Railway station
Yes it is quiet except on saturdays when from about 3 pm until 11 pm it is packed with BKK tourists at the antique market it sell clothes and other stuff as well
One thing that amuses me is the locals insist it is called Pranburi CITY the place on the Petchakasem road is refered to as Pranuri Market
that post was in a way answering buksis article
The joke is the only visible mention of the word CITY is on two roadsigns pointing to the village and they read Pranburi city pillar shrineThen, some 30 years ago, the Pran Buri district office was moved to a new location on Phetkasem Road, a good distance from the original site, and everything was transferred, including the population _ at least those who chose to relocate.

All of this snipping is a bit pathetic and childish and nothing to do with the topic, if you have a beef with someone why not do it with PM's or better still dukes up at dawn so we can all watch you both fall over exhausted after five minutes.
Enjoy the forum, don't be personal and don't take things personal and most of all stick to the topic in question.

Take your puerile bickering elsewhere, any more and its a suspension, we do not need playground antics on this forum.

Re: Hello from newbie with big plans
I, being one of the "minority" by the sounds of things here, agree with Takiap........if it feels right go for it.....HH is no better and no worse than any other "town/City" ....not sure how to describe it having lived in bigger cities in the world...than anywhere else. Sure over the years it is growing......but, lets face it.....power/greed and not forgetting the "expats" will always ensure it thrives! No doubt there are a few who will disagree with me on that one! Just enjoy!
