Seems a bit pointless referencing applications years ago.
Full details are on the DLT web site, however as everyone knows this is Ting Tong Land and anything can happen.

Renewing two year driver's license

Post by Hnlwayne »

Has anyone been to Pranburi lately to renew their Thai two year license? We are hoping to get five more years and wondering:

1. Do we need a medical certificate?
2. Do we need proof of address letter from immigration and if so do we still have to pay B500 per letter despite the "no tip" policy at immigration?

Anything else to bring?

From someone who did it last year:

No, you don't need a medical certificate.
Yes you do need 'letters of residence' from immigration and you will pay 500 baht per letter. (two are needed if licence needed for car and motorbike. I know they're supposed to be free and immigration do display the 'No Tips' notice but I guess this will not be looked on as a tip. Just the 'status quo'.
It's been said many times but I'll say it again. Renew just after your birthday and you'll get 5 years from your next birthday bringing it to almost 6 years.

I did my first residence letter at the new Imm building yesterday.
FYI, do not do as I did and go upstairs. It was chaotic there at just after 3pm. A pretty much busted up ticket machine and no numbers being called or shown. There was a young lad trying to keep track of the queuing system.
I was seen after about 35 mins to be told that I had to go downstairs where the photocopier is. There's a little office around the corner and that's where you apply.
I'm not sure if the delay was due to two others doing the same thing at the same time but it took a further hour. 1.5 hours for a residency letter (although 30 mins was wasted). Do not go upstairs!!
And 500 THB as we know.

If renewing 2 year for 5 year I think you still need a Medical Certificate. When you renew a 5 year you no longer need one

That concurs with the information I was given when I renewed my 2 year license (in Cha Am) last year.
Also, of course, you can only get a 5 year license if you're on a non-immigrant visa.

December 2018:
Certificate of Residence at Immigration in Tha Yang is free. And for car and motorbike you get only 1. There is written "for motorbike and car", i had made a copy myself.

Unfortunately they have the page URLs wrong way round. That link is for getting two year licence for first time. Going from 2 year to 5 year is at https://www.dlt.go.th/en/two-year-license/

This is strange that you dont need a medical certificate for the second 5 years extension. Even if you are 90 years old and blind and deaf?

Oh being blind and deaf doesn't bar you from driving in Thailand. Just stand by any busy junction and observe.

Blind to road signs, road markings and traffic lights.
Deaf to ambulance sirens and other emergency vehicles.

I enquired at the Cha Am transport office yesterday ( re. renewal of a 5 year licence) and they told me that I need to bring my expired driving licence, my passport with a valid non-imm. visa, a certificate of residence (either from the immigration department or my yellow book tabien baan which has been verified by letter as valid by the tessabaan). I was told no medical certificate was required, although a notice on the wall states that a medical certificate is required for renewal of a one year licence.

I will be in Pranburi next week and will enquire there and see what their requirements are.

If you have the letter from Imm , medical cert, copies of passport and whatever visa pages etc and a IDP you will not need to watch any videos or do any test apart from colour blind test, which the girl at the desk handles to get your first licence.
To renew first 5 year licence you need the same paper work as above but without the IDP but your 2 year Thai licence.
I am sure you only need to watch the video and do the tests if you do not have a IDP.

Good point! I had an IDP when I first got my 2 yr license. Never had to watch video or do any tests for my 5 yrs.

Why go to both, you were at the Cha Am office and advised what was required why not follow through and it would have been done by now.
