i used to seperate everything in appartment in bangkok, on nut area, then fon and shy, my hosts, brought me out to the balcony/clothes line, and pointed down to a small shanty type building, and a heap of rubbish.
I watched for a few days, and realised all our rubbish was collected by the dump truck, dumped round the back, then sorted, then re collected, and the waste disposed of.
My hosts didnt like me seperating it first. Dont know why, maybe space, it was a 2000 baht appartment.

At the misseses house in prachuap, everything is recycled, even when we host a barbeque on seafront, she lifts all the beer bottles and brings them home to the ma, who passes them to a neighbour. There is definetly a status thing going on, with the newly well off embarrassed to be seen keeping a few bahts worth, and the enlightened few collecting everything to give to the less well off.

As with all LOS woes , education is the only way forward, be that through school, travel, or observation of others.

Please everybody keep your waste seperate to make it more viable for its next owner.

I used to colllect lemonade bottles to get money in pub next door as a child, it is kinda nice doing it again.

Please note if buying beer for thai company, they may not point out that bottles are cheaper than cans as aluminium is worth much more than glass, i know because they had me buying cans the first two years i came out here.

Finally Dawn, if you dry out the old papers/crap and heap up eneough of it, you could construct a small CHP combined heat and power plant and have free electric and hot water, coconut shells and dry dung are also good fuels .

A few years ago we received a really nice calendar from PTT, the major Thai petroleum company. It was all about preserving the environment.

On one month there was a notation" tied with banana string, the simple lotus leaf is durable enough to carry most foods home. And easily endurable by the world that gives us our food to begin with".
Then on another "as supermarkets replace the talad, vegetables come in plastic bags instead of nature's wrapping. If our world becomes plastic will we lose sight of the trees?"
We were very surprised at the frankness and insight this calendar displayed, particularly at that time when Thailand was really becoming one big garbage dump, and even more surprised that something such as this would come from an organisation like PTT.

I got all... Mushy inside when I read this topic - It really... get's me... Sad to think about how we crummy humans polute the enviroment as we do... Well, I'm gonna do my part. I went out and I bought 3 big black plastic bins today - 1 for paper, 1 for plastic and 1 for random trash - + a box for glas and cans. Now, the girfriends family can sell it, or the local "i pick up trash, sort it, and sell it"-guy can get it. I only wish we had the same guys/gals in Denmark, to sort out the trash and recycle it :(

Everyone recycle please! :thumb:

Now that most of the world has bought into the banning things that are bad for your health concept perhaps it's time for the banning of things that are bad for the environment.

I believe such bans are already in place in Italy mainly because of the problems in Venice that were being exacerbated by plastic bags. Now they have to be biodegradeable in all cases.

I Thailand I wold definitely start with the 7/11 compulsory straws and plastic spoons followed by the road side stalls that sell coke in plastic bottles because the deposit on the bottle is more than the cost of the coke.

Coca Cola and Pepsico should play an active role in this as they are the main perpetrators.

In 7/11 or Family Mart I always remove the plastic straw and/or spoon and fork and put it on the counter with a polite Mai Ow C'ap.

Another thing I do if someone chucks anything out of the truck window is to stop and tell them that if they do it again they can get out and f***ing walk.

Yes I do know that the truck does as much damage to the environment as the rubbish.

Not necessarily. Mix some Thai herb in with the diesel fuel, then run a hose from the exhaust pipe into the cab. Breathe deeply and enjoy! Your trip will last minutes, but seem like hours. Cheech or Chong, I forget who I am today.
