Pacemaker battery replacement in the US

Post by egeefay »

Here's my story.
My wife's pacemaker battery was running out and it was time to replace the pacemaker.
Very routine procedure.
We live in the US
Cost to replace pacemaker and one night's stay in hospital
$5700 US dollars.
The bill was actually $25000 but the insurance company gets a special discount so all we had to pay was the $5700 (200,000 baht)

So for all you whiners in Thailand...thank your lucky stars you aren't in a western hospital.

I can't wait to move to Thailand and cancel my health insurance policy in the US ($750 a month for my wife and myself...catastrophic coverage only...$5800 deductible)

First of all, I object to you calling us whiners. The lady that I wrote the OP about had no money. Her husband was in a poorly paid (for an expat) job. He has since moved elsewhere in Thailand & she has moved back to the States so that they can get some money together. Her few thousand baht was probably the same to her as your $5,700 is to you. Costs are relative to what you can afford.

Secondly, be very careful about what insurance you select here to replace that which you are so looking forward to cancelling. One that will cover your wife's pre existing condition & will cover eventualities that may arise will not be cheap, even here. After 4 years of paying my medical insurance, I found I wasn't fully covered for anything that might realistically happen to a woman in her 30's. Heart attack, though, yes I was covered. Things that were more likely to happen, I was between 8% and 25% covered. So, it might not be as wonderful here as you think.

Compare what is comparable...of course medical cost will be higher in the US where i spent a lot of times, and i know medical insurance is expensive... for thailand i thought the cost of visiting an hospital for simple consultation and a puffer for Asthma was not cheap at 7000 baht...thats the reply of one of the"whiners"...dont think because we live or are spending time in thailand we are ignorant of the cost associated with western of hospital...Unless i am mistaken the purpose of this forum is to exchange informations and share experiences...now you can put your point accross without judging others...Most of us on this forum are also well travelled and can recognise the many other benefits of living in Thailand...

Can i please tell my story , my step son 3,1/2 yrs ago was hit by a drunk on a MC while sitting on his MC at an intersection by Tha- yang on the phetchkasim road. He was taken to phetchaburi hospital and left bleeding from the knee and mouth in a bed ,they did not xray or anything and said as this was the night time would have to see a special doctor tomorrow, after about an hour he started to be sick ,it was blood going everywhere. Well my wife started to scream and i said to her sister to phone to the petcherat to come and get him . We told the ward sister that we were taking him they were not happy but this was done, and the petcherat people came and he was transferred to the hospital ,on arrival it was all systems go doctors nurses doing there jobs scans ,x rays everything being done ,into OR and after into ICU for 6 days , and a private room for 10days . He had his knee cap broken into 4 and was wired and his jaw broken in 3 places this was set and his jaw wired together and was fed through a straw for 5 weeks. The petcharat did a very good job you would not know he had ,had the accident . And the cost 75000bhat we had no insurance from the man that hit him he did not have any and never payed any compensation , even when the police set it and told him to pay . We had about 12000 from my step sons insurance ,the rest i payed my self . Once again well done the petcherat hospital.

I went in boxing day to have a very infected wisdom tooth removed. Total bill including antibiotics a whooping 827 THB. The only thing at SP that in my oppinion is not overpriced is the Dental section.

As regards to the other posts about overcharging,i too have been a SP victim.

Not to worry new hospital should open sometime in the next five years!

The Hua Hin Dog Shelter was supposed to officially open 3 years ago, on His Majesty's birthday. Despite the fact it's running, it's still not had its official opening. So, I agree with Sarge & won't be holding my breath for the hospital. If they miss the deadline for this birthday, there's always the next one to aim for.
