Norseman, I have a small suspicion that this whole issue has more to do with silencing avenues of political dissent than the original problem which seems to have been largely addressed. Any attempt to prosecute people for internet â€œcrimesâ€

By making it Public what kind semi draconian Censorship is going on in their Home country. and try to put pressure the leaders of their host countries to ask the Thai Junta Government questions.

This may be very risky for Thais who live abroad as they fear not being able to enter their Homeland again after they participated in such rallies.
But I think it's the only way Thais outside of Thailand who love Democracy and want the current Interim Government to correct the policies which lead to these Laws!
The Thai Community is very large in the US. They in turn can put a Petition to their Senator and they in turn can ask questions to the Government on what is going on.
The Interim Governemt may not like this but the constant pressure will in either way Democratise Thailand or put it further into Isolation by going their own way!

The Thai Minister came back from China waxing lyrical about how well China had got it defences up against the internet.
OK, that was about a year ago under the Thaksin regime. However, this junta love it.
Expect more. Welcome to the real world.

I accept all your comments regarding censorship and lack of democracy in Thailand.
However, If You Tube had just taken that first video off, as soon as they were asked there would not be all these hastles now.
Everyone agrees that the offending clip was highly insulting towards HM The King.
As I mentioned in another thread, You Tube can and does censor when it wants to.
eg: Sex and Muslim religion and probably a few other things.

I agree with Guess, there must have been some motivation somewhere to put up the offending clip in the first place. How easy would it be to implement new laws and more censorship if they had a nice big public example?

I don't see how anyone can be prosecuted unless three things are done:

1) Google hands over the IP address of the offending poster
2) The Thai authorities successfully track it to a physical address or phone line
3) That address and the person residing there is located in Thailand

It seems they're just after a scapegoat now to be made example of but if all three are not done they have no chance, could I get arrested if I made a derogatory comment about certain religious practices or leaders in a certain middle eastern country? No, they would probably issue a Fatwah if I did it on a large public website but they could not press charges unless I did it from within that country. Maybe this is what MICT is trying to find out by demanding Google hand over the IP addresses?

I love this letter from the Bangkokpost.com site which sums up Thai attitudes:

We really should be somewhat forgiving of people from other cultures who use the Internet to denigrate Thailand and Thai culture, understanding that they have not had the chance and privilege to live in and enjoy a truly civilised society such as our kingdom provides. They, through no choice of their own, have been morally deprived and should be pitied. However, suing them in court for all their money is still a good idea.
