Agree with BB.

Haven't seen the film but read the book. Both have been panned by his family and Johny Giles successully sued for how he was portrayed in the book. It is fiction and like everyone else who was around to witness events, he complained that the story told is basically not true and damages reputations.

Giles also made the point that the dead can't see and he was appalled how Clough was portrayed.

Randy, if you want to see how bad Leeds could be, just watch the Chelsea v Leeds FA cup replay from 1970 - not that Chelsea were shrinking violets. The game would have had to be abandoned if played now.

"The replay at Old Trafford, watched by a television audience of 28 million, a record for an FA Cup final, became one of the most notorious matches in English football. Modern day referee David Elleray "replayed" the match years later, and concluded that the sides should have received six red cards and twenty yellow cards between them. Not long into the match, Ron Harris caught Eddie Gray with a kick to the back of the knee, an action which virtually immobilised the Scot. Charlton kneed and headbutted Peter Osgood and Chelsea's goalkeeper Peter Bonetti was injured after being bundled into the net by Leeds' Jones, who minutes later rounded the limping immobile Bonetti and scored the opener. Norman Hunter and Ian Hutchinson traded punches while McCreadie and Johnny Giles lunged at opposition players.

Chelsea's equaliser eventually came after a flowing move from which Osgood scored with a diving header from a Charlie Cooke cross. Charlton should have been marking Osgood, but had 'lost' him, whilst chasing Hutchinson to exact retribution for a deadleg administered in the Chelsea penalty area a minute or so earlier. In scoring, Osgood became the last player to date to have scored in every round of the FA Cup. With the game at 1–1 in extra time, Hutchinson sent in a long throw-in which missed almost every player in the penalty area, but came off Charlton's head and looped towards the far post, before being put into the unguarded net by Webb to give the Londoners the lead for the first time. Chelsea kept the lead to secure their first FA Cup win".

Ah, the good old days!

Strangley enough in the dvd extras they interview players that played for Forest and Leeds under him and they said the film was true to how he was.

I think it's probably a case of the truth hurts...

I'd say yes and yes even though it was before my time I've read and heard enough.

Don Revie's Leeds are famed for kicking lumps out of teams and Cloughs Forest won the European Cup at the time Juve and co were European Giants. Enough said.

That's a bigger achievement than Benitez winning it with the awful squad he inherited or Mourinho's famous Porto triumph.
Clough wrote:"I’m sure the England selectors thought if they took me on and gave me the job, I’d want to run the show. They were shrewd because that’s exactly what I would have done"
I think I'll download "The Damned United" for tonights viewing.

I think there was a shift between the book and the film because of the the legal action? He became an alchie in later life but not at Leeds, which was alluded to in the book. There was a documentary not that long ago about Cloughie and the book which Giles and other Leeds, Derby and Forest players contributed to. It was clear that he was loved and loathed by them in equal measure.

In my first post I mentioned the dead can't 'see', it should have read 'sue' and if you think about it, as Giles successfully sued for how his relationship with Clough was vividly portrayed, albeit fiction, then it follows that the Clough portrayal is false as well.

Which is why Giles was bascically taking part in the programme. That he could protect his reputation as he was alive, but Clough couldn't - he was angry for Clough and the damage to his reputation.

Still, it was an enjoyable read and I've already bought the 'Red Riding' books, also written by David Peace, as holiday reading for LOS!

Cheers for reminding me of that RC. I was trying to think of films to stick on my snazzy new phone for when I'm Thai TV'd out in Dec/Jan.

It's that and "The Hangover" so far. (Anybody seen that?)

Won't be watching it or reading the papers until Tuesday.

We really need to batter Utd next Saturday and there's the small matter of Lyon on Tuesday night.

I used to believe that too, then you hear about classy teams going 20 years without winning the league. Still Liverpool have another 6 or 7 months to dispell that rumour
