Data from Pollution Control Department (PCD) monitoring stations in Bangkok on Wednesday showed the level of dangerous tiny particulates have exceeded the official Thai safety limit of 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air.
Bang Phlat district reached 53mcg for particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Influencing the high level is a high pressure system from the North that is causing an accumulation of low-level dust due to calm winds.
Moreover, the level of PM2.5 in many districts of Bangkok has risen beyond 40mcg per cubic metre. This trend is forecast to continue.
The World Health Organisation places the safety limit at 25mcg.

The SW Monsoon is still prevailing, but there are indications that it is weakening. During the transition to the NE Monsoon there is usually variable mixed conditions. The following is probably a better indication than TMD reports that are never too sure just which way the wind is blowing!

Seasonal Outlook

Seasonal Forecast for September-October-November 2019
Updated 2 September 2019
The Southwest Monsoon season typically persists until October, with the prevailing winds blowing from the southeast or southwest. During this period, the northern ASEAN region is in its rainy season, while dry conditions would prevail over the southern ASEAN region.
The Southwest Monsoon season transitions to inter-monsoon conditions by late-October or early-November. Inter-monsoon conditions are typically characterised by light and variable winds. These conditions also include an increase in shower activities over the southern ASEAN region.
For rainfall, below-normal conditions are expected over most parts of the Maritime Continent, particularly over southern Sumatra and Kalimantan, as well as the surrounding Java Sea areas. Above-normal rainfall is likely over some parts of the northern ASEAN region (southern parts of Myanmar and Thailand).
Above-normal temperature is expected over most parts of the ASEAN region during the Sep-Oct-Nov 2019 season except for regions south of the equator where near-normal or below-normal temperature is predicted, in particular over the oceans.
With drier-than-usual conditions forecast to persist over many parts of the southern ASEAN region, there may be further escalation of hotspot activities in the fire-prone provinces of Sumatra and Kalimantan. This could lead to an increase in the risk of transboundary haze occurrence. In the northern ASEAN region, hotspot activities are expected to remain generally subdued due to rainy weather.
The qualitative outlook is assessed for the region in general. For specific updates on the national scale, the relevant ASEAN National Meteorological and Hydrological Services should be consulted.
http://asmc.asean.org/asmc-el-nino#Seasonal_Outlook
The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) monitoring system remains in the “Neutral” status this month. Sub-surface temperatures of the tropical Pacific Ocean continue to show cooling trend, especially for regions east of the International Date Line (i.e., the Central and Eastern Pacific). Normal easterly trade winds have resumed along the equatorial Pacific.
The Nino3.4 index was 0.54°C for July 2019 and 0.36°C for May-July 2019 three-month average.
Model outlooks from international centres are generally predicting Nino3.4 SST anomalies to continue weakening until around November 2019. Beyond that, however, the model outlooks are uncertain showing a wide spread of possible outcomes.
Another key driver that will influence rainfall over Singapore and the nearby region in the next few months is the Indian Ocean sea-surface temperature anomalies. Currently an Indian Ocean-related index monitored, called the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), is in the positive phase. The positive IOD is expected to peak in September 2019 before decaying gradually towards the end of the year. A positive IOD can lead to below-normal rainfall conditions over Singapore and the nearby region and is contributing to the current drier conditions.

Could do with some more rain to clean this current pollution from the air.

The department warned people to avoid staying outdoors, under large trees or in unstable buildings during heavy rains and gusts.
The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is as follows:

I tend to take most of the weather forecasts with a pinch of salt. The local “Weather Channel” forecast for Cha Am says that at 1.00pm rain 100% - it’s now 1pm there is no rain and about 50% cloud and blue sky.
Edit. Just updated it and the rain forecast has gone, replaced by sun and cloud with no rain forecast until 9pm tonight - let’s wait and see!!

Thailand's winter to start on Thursday
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... n-thursday
Thailand will enter winter on Thursday as temperatures remain cool and rainfall declines in the upper part of the country.
Phuwiang Prakhammin, director-general of the Meteorological Department, on Monday announced the beginning of winter. He forecast winds blowing from the Northeast and East at low altitudes between 100 metres and 3,500 metres Rain would decline in upper Thailand while continuing in the South.
He expected winter to last until mid-February, with lower temperatures than usual in Chiang Rai, Nan, Nakhon Phanom and Sakol Nakhon provinces.
This winter the average low temperature nationwide will be 20-21 degrees Celsius, lower than last year's 21.9 degrees Celsius, he said. Frost is likely on mountain peaks in December and January.
Mr Phuwiang said the country's lowest temperature is expected to be 7-8 degrees Celsius in Chiang Rai, Nan, Nakhon Phanom and Sakol Nakhon, while the low in greater Bangkok will be 15-17 degrees Celsius.
On Monday and Tuesday, heavy rain is still likely in upper Thailand. Afterwards the rain will decrease, winds will strengthen and temperatures will drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius, he said.

Last night's storm awoke my wife and I as we slept in our room at Aquamarine in Thew Talay Estate. The lightening, thunder and rain were all fierce. We dragged in the beach towels and swimsuits drying on the balcony and shut the windows. As we got back in bed we heard what seemed to be a loud explosion. I figured it was a power transformer.
This morning I went up to the 13th floor Sky Lounge to watch the sunrise. it was then that I discovered that the explosion was the storm blowing out the plate glass windows in the lounge and ripping a heavy wooden door right off its hinges.

Whoops, I thought you were talking about the current storm
Just realised you meant the one that Ratsima is talking about. Yes, we had that as well near Soi 94, but not as fierce. Quite a long power out though.
