Has anyone talked about Secret State? I just found it on Sundance channel (True 135). Is it an ongoing series or just a two or three episode movie? I just watched the one where the PM is killed in a plane crash..... Edge of the chair type stuff so far. Pete

The interplay of the 2 main characters looked promising but ludicrous story line turned me off.
I'm inclined to agree. Dim shades of Hannibal Lecter and Agent Starling, but holes in the plot a country mile wide. And I'm not picky - hell, I watched all 500 episodes of 24!

Watched The Blacklist on catchup...disappointing for me. I suppose I noticed lots of flaws ...what a coincidence that under the exact spot her husband got stabbed should be the place where he hid his money stash and identity, passports etc. :P
I shall probably watch the next one...hoping it will improve

I always download new shows 2 episodes at a time because of the now common practice of airing the pilot as the first episode. Anyway, it didn't get better in episode 2, IMHO. Still plot holes one could drive a oil tanker through, still stupid FBI and FBI tactics. And there was a new level of annoyance. When the the female lead had a non verbal reaction to communicate her inner life to the audience it was, because it's network and not cable tv, not subtle. In fact, It was only slightly less restrained than this:

DRACULA

Jonathan Rhys Myers seems to be a costume drama fave across the Atlantic, so its no surprise that he's been drafted in to bring a bit of Tudors magic to the titular befanged one. If you are expecting a rework of the classic Stoker tale then check those expectations at the door. This is more like a Victorian gothic revenge thriller with a passing whiff of steampunk where only the character names are familiar.

Alexander Grayson, an American technologist and entrepreneur, launches himself onto the social scene of Victorian London bringing with him the white hot technological advances first dreamt of by Telsa - field effect free electricity for all. But behind the philanthropy lies a dark secret....Grayson is in fact the resurrected Dracula, here not to bring light but blood spattered darkness. His aristocratic snooty industrialist rivals are in fact his sworn enemies The Order Of The Dragon, and he wants their blood and heads for burning his wife at the stake 500 years before, then sentencing him to an eternity in a steel coffin. Luckily for Mr Grayson/Dracula he has allies who have also suffered at the hands of the Order, and so begins his red path of revenge.

Top line stuff with some great drama and intrigue ahead, as well as some very cool slo mo fighty bitey action and a dash of bodice ripping thrown in to spice things up.

Im hooked

Also well worthy of your televisual attention is the new series of the Sherlock Holmes in New York pastiche ELEMENTARY which I love, and best of all on Monday night UK time we have the much awaited second series of the top class Victorian gothic crime series RIPPER STREET. WHITECHAPEL just finished its run so series droppers will want to get their paws on that as well if you like your crime series with more than a whiff of the supernatural and splattery doo.

Not sure if it is a good one since I have not had time to look at it yet...
"Ambassadors" is set in the fictional Central Asian Republic of Tazbekistan where newly arrived British Ambassador Keith Davies is set the task of trying to secure a 2 billion GPB helicopter contract for the United Kingdom.

Any country that isn't pursuing its interests in the world has lost its way. Britain hasn't lost its way yet, has it? That's why we have an impressive global network of Embassies run by hard working diplomats. To secure our interests. And to help tourists who've fallen off their mopeds or lost 'everything'.

Keith Davis (David Mitchell) is the newly appointed British Ambassador of Tazbekistan, one of the ex-Soviet 'Stans': newly oil rich, corrupt and ruled over by President Kairat (aka The Prez). Davis is ambitious and fancies himself in Washington or Beijing. He intends to make his mark in this posting. Though well aware that one major diplomatic event can make - or break - a career.

I enjoyed this although a bit gruesome
The Tunnel
Set primarily in Folkestone and Calais where detectives Karl Roebuck and Elise Wassermann are called to investigate the death of a French politician. When a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, the pair is forced into an uneasy partnership as they seek out a politically-motivated serial killer who draws them into his own personal agenda.

Sleepy Hollow

Never a dull moment. The years highest rated new show on American TV.

I don't like mysteries, most police procedurals and all TV things supernatural except Twilight Zone and some of the X-Files. Only reason to try it was a long time friend who Hates TV suggested it. First season was 7 episodes. I've finished 3 and will watch the rest so as to catch up to the second season, now airing.

From my favorite TV critic, after the pilot episode: I honestly can't tell you if FOX's "Sleepy Hollow," the first new show of the 2013-14 network TV season, is good or bad — and I've already watched the pilot episode twice. ... But if it's bad, it's in a memorable, weird, fun way. It's a show that goes for broke, does not apologize for its excesses and is never, ever boring.

Same critic, after the second episode: This isn't earth-shattering Golden Age of Television stuff, but it's all handled with the sort of confidence you want to see from a show that blends a complicated (and admittedly nutty) mythology, horror genre tropes and a bantery central relationship. If what you're hoping for from "Sleepy Hollow" is a crazy/creepy/charming escapist ride, we're off to a good start.

The show wouldn't work without that bantery relationship. Many shows failed to even come close to the Mulder and Scully dynamic from the X-Files. The relationship between Icabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills could become as compelling, even though they're dancing to a different tune.

moja wrote:We have now seen 3 episodes of Utopia and like you we think we are enjoying it - it is certainly strange at times. A couple of times we have nearly given up and then something happens and we decide to give the next episode a go. Episode 4 tonight!
I binge watched it in the last 2 days. Give up? I don't think I could have. I recommend it highly.

Utopia is a complex, violent thriller. A handful of ordinary folks (including a conspiracy theorist) have the misfortune to meet in a pub with a man who has the long rumored unpublished second volume of a graphic novel. The manuscript, and all those associated with it, are being hunted by a powerful secret organization who will stop at nothing to get hold of it.

Series 2 is on the way. Channel 4 has not announced the premier date.

Be forewarned, it's violent, including torture and many cold blooded killings of innocents who were silenced because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Helix

An unknown deadly disease strikes an Antarctic research base. A large pharmaceutical company operates the base. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) sends in a team. The base director promises full cooperation but it becomes apparent that's not happening. The deaths are not caused by a disease - they're working with mutagens and at least one subject got loose.

The show combines several well used horror situations: trapped on an isolated base with plenty of places to hide, an unknown killer, no way to know if the killer can infect others - or how. Throw in a large corporation's questionable ethics and priorities, stir often, spraying blood a few times a episode. So far nothing groundbreaking, it's just an enjoyable horror/ suspense show. Acting, cinematography, lighting and sound are a cut above the typical series from the SyFy (Science fiction & horror) US cable network, probably because of the bigger than usual series budget.

Three episodes have aired, 10 more to come. Airs Friday nights in the US, so will be available in all the usual places sometime Saturday in Thailand.

Just got started on The Blacklist and have to say very good, available at all good torrent sites
:agree:

Just finished 'Breaking Bad' and it's cost me a few late nights. It's compulsive viewing IMO as it leaves you hanging at the end of each episode and gets more complicated and involved as the episodes roll by. Don't think anything can match it for suspense and intrigue. Love the write up on colour coding to portray moods but don't read up on that too much as it gives the plot away

Sir Anthony Hopkins binge watched it last fall. He then wrote a email to Bryan Cranston, the actor who played Walter White. The email was made public. Highly recommended any fan read it. If somehow one don't know who Hopkins is, a career summary for acting awards is 1 Oscar win + 3 nominations, a Golden Globe lifetime achievement award + 9 nominations, 3 BAFTA wins + 4 nominations.

Uncanny. So the maestro Sir AH loved it too. All the time I watched it I pictured AH as a suitable contender to BC to play the part
