No Attention Paid wrote:Thai airways has just cancelled flights between London & BKK on 6 days thru' Nov, & 2 or 3 days in Dec..due to the flooding in BKK it says..??? Is this due to people changing their holiday plans..?
(In the Thai bulletin it did say other route-cancellations will be announced later)..WTF??
I read somewhere that some of the aircrews are having trouble getting to work due to the floods and conditions at home. Maybe this is now having an effect on flights to and from Bangkok?

I do know of 3 people travelling to Bangkok last week, on different flights, who have encountered no problems with their flights. :thumb:

Army focuses on evacuation efforts

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... on-efforts

Published: 14/11/2011 at 04:50 PM
Online news:

The army will now focus more on helping with the evacuation of flood victims, army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Monday.

The priority now is for troops to take them to designated shelter centres.

Gen Prayuth said that flood prevention operations should be halted because the massive deluge of floodwater was too overwhelming to hold back.

Soldiers have been sent to nearby provinces such as Samut Sakhon, which is now at risk of flooding.

Troops from the 9th Infantry Division were also helping with evacuations in Thon Buri, Gen Prayuth said

He also said that if only short sections of Rama II Road were flooded, the army was ready to construct bailey bridges over the flooded stretches so that traffic could continue.

Gen Prayuth urged all sides involved in flood relief to put aside conflict and work together to steer the country out of the crisis.

``This is no time to point fingers at each other. We have to focus now on what we should do after floods recede,'' he said.

A bailey bridge is a temporary bridge especially designed for rapid construction and dismantling.

Residents end Rama II roadblock

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... called-off

Published: 14/11/2011 at 01:01 PM
Online news:

Local residents have ended their protest on Rama II Road after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration agreed to their demand for more pumps to drain water from the area.

The residents were from communities in Soi 88 and Soi 92 off Rama II Road in Bang Khun Thian district.

They blocked Rama II Road this morning in protest, accusing the BMA of not doing enough to cope with the floodwater.

I don`t know which country this "expert" is living in, but it can not be Thailand:
"If the government decides to use this plan and it passes an environmental impact assessment, construction is expected to be completed within three years,"
Pass what? How many years?
Among the 11 proposed measures, particular attention was paid to collecting a direct flood tax from the owners of permanent structures located on natural floodways or in water-retention areas.
Yeah, right.

The tax rate for buildings in the zones, for example, would be 20 or 30 times higher than the rate elsewhere. The difference would be kept for future use as compensation for flood victims.[/
b] Say what??????

[b
]"Early disaster warning systems should also be improved so that people in the highest-risk areas can prepare for evacuation. This won't cause panic,"
 Hope it works better than the tsunami system.

The government should control the use of groundwater in agricultural areas to prevent subsidence and should encourage farmers to raise plants or crops that can withstand extreme weather conditions
, Oh yes, they already do that, just see how well it works!

Laws should be amended to support disaster management and promote public participation, and an agency should be set up to battle disasters using hi-tech equipment based on research, according to the plan
. I thought the public was already participating-- just look at how many barriers and sluice gates they have damaged!

Sad really. They have the labour and the technology but no way of getting around politicians!
