Government says private sector has no need to order vaccines
Thailand’s government, through the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said late Wednesday that the private sector and hospital groups have no need to order vaccines on their own as the government would be able to provide for all vaccine needs.

Thai Enquirer reported on Wednesday that private sector requests for the government to countersign vaccine acquisition orders were being ignored by the public health ministry.

The lack of government action came despite criticisms from opposition and coalition politicians over the lack of movement on vaccines and the government’s stonewalling of the private sector’s request.

Now, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha appears to be walking back promises made in a public address two weeks ago in which he promised to expedite and allow private hospitals to acquire their own vaccines to supplement the national pool.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce released a statement to private hospitals on Wednesday evening confirming the new direction following meetings it had with the prime minister. The statement, which was shared with the Thai Enquirer, reads as follows.

“The government has informed the Thai Chamber of Commerce that it has sourced enough vaccines to meet the requirement of every citizens, therefore the private sector does not need to buy any additional vaccines.”

The news will likely spark outrage among critics of the government and the general public who accuse the Prayut administration of not doing enough to inoculate the people leading to a rapidly worsening third wave of Covid-19.

Vaccinations in Thailand

So far, 1,344,646 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Thailand with 1,059,721 people who have received their first dose of the vaccine and 284,925 people who have received both doses. Natapanu says Thailand will soon roll out a “massive vaccination plan.”

Expats in Thailand are eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. Natapanu says more information on the vaccination plan for foreigners residing in Thailand will be released at a later date.

“All people residing in Thailand, regardless of nationality, are eligible to receive the vaccine under the plan.”

Samples from 2 batches of the AstraZeneca vaccine that was locally produced by Siam Bioscience have passed quality tests. The plan to produce and distribute the vaccine locally remains on schedule, with plans to start administering the doses in June.

The Public Health Ministry is also negotiating with other Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers, such as Pfizer, to reach its goal of acquiring 100 million doses within the year. Pfizer has declared its vaccine safe for children 12 and older, making it appealing to Thailand where children are not yet being vaccinated against the coronavirus.

I think that unless you're female, less than 50 years old, there's practically no risk of blood clot from the AZ vaccine. Even if you are female and under 50 the risks are still tiny; a 1000 times less than taking contraceptive pills.

If you're under the age of 60 and don't get the virus and or die by 1 Aug. you can receive the vaccine. May, June, July, then, redemption. In the meantime, don't leave your dwelling and don't let anybody in.

Now let's see. Sinovac is currently approved for emergency use. AZ was approved just 2 days ago. Pfizer, J & J and others haven't arrived as yet so have not been offered to anyone until approval. I'm sure these vaccines will get approval once a supply has been established.

With regard to Sinovac, the government have already said that it will not be used on over 60's, which I'm pretty sure covers the majority of expats.

Not directly linked to tourism, but connected to buying vaccines. The Thai Federation of Industry has now announced plans to buy it's own vaccines. It won't happen, but control seems to be slipping and anarchy taking over! It's all a mess.

According to deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Natapanu Nopakun, all expats living in Thailand are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

He says Thailand plans to roll out a “massive vaccination plan” to vaccinate all people who are living in Thailand, including foreign residents.

All people residing in Thailand, regardless of nationality, are eligible to receive the vaccine under the plan.

He made the announcement during the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration’s daily on Thursday.

He added that more information on the vaccination plan for foreigners residing in Thailand will be released at a later date.
