The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on Wednesday reported 2,112 new cases and 15 deaths.

Of the deaths, four were in Bangkok, two each in Nonthaburi and Sukhothai, and one each in Pathum Thani, Rayong, Yala, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Phanom and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The ages of those who succumbed to the virus ranged between 50 and 86, and most reportedly suffered from chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other complications.

Bangkok is again leading the list with 789 confirmed cases, followed by 249 in Nonthaburi, 226 in Samut Prakan and 110 in Chonburi.

Also included in the list of confirmed cases were five returnees, but the CCSA did not provide details on where they came from.

Separately, 1,886 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours.

As of Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 74,900. Of these, 71,556 had been contracted locally, including 22,794 who were found via proactive testing, while 3,344 were returnees.

So far, 44,360 have recovered and been discharged, 30,222 patients are still in hospitals, and 318 have died.

According to Worldometer, as of 10am on Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 154.94 million (up by 775,819), 132.42 million of whom have recovered, 19.28 million are active cases (111,075 in severe condition) and 3.24 million have died (up by 13,648).

Thailand ranks 99th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 33.27 million, followed by India 20.65 million, Brazil 14.86 million, France 5.68 million, and Turkey 4.92 million.

Meanwhile, another 44,493 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, while 29,965 people were given their second shot, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in Thailand to 1,573,075.

Probably a 'typo' but when they get one figure wrong, it does question whether other figures are true!

Brazilian Covid-19 varient found in Thailand in arrival quarantine

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration announced today that the Brazilian variant of Covid-19 has been detected in some arriving international travellers. A spokesperson was quick to confirm that the strain had been detected only in state quarantine, and not at all in local communities and that the infection had been immediately contained. The patients have been said to have been properly treated already, but the announcement did not verify if it was the highly contagious P.1. variant of Covid-19.

The dangerous P.1. variant was first found in the Amazonian capital of Manaus and is suspected to have originated around November of 2020. Researchers found it to be 1.7 to 2.4 times more transmissible and 1.2 to 1.9 times more deadly than previous coronavirus strains, though extenuating factors may have influenced the statistics.

The Brazilian strain is troublesome because it’s possible that it could reinfect people who had previous strains of Covid-19 or even those that have been vaccinated already. Researchers were unsure if the variant was more powerful because of an increased viral load or because it remains in the body longer. They identified 17 mutations including three spike protein mutations that seem to let the virus attach more closely to human cells and possibly avoid antibody. There was evidence that immune responses to prior strains would be ineffective against the P.1. variant.

The CCSA reassured the people of Thailand that there is no indication that this dangerous strain has spread beyond the quarantine into Thailand at all, where current outbreaks have 343 people on ventilators and 1,042 people in critical condition out of over 30,000 people currently hospitalized with Covid-19.

I don't know if I was the only one with his head in the sand, but since the start of this pandemic I though alcohol restrictions were just governments being bloody minded. 16 months on, the Thai government has produced a reason.
Has this always been the case, or has somebody written it to justify their actions? Why has the explanation taken so long to be publicised?

Alcohol does reduce the body's immune system temporarily - but their actions have been more to do with control and preventing people from going out at night and socializing. The junta has always had an anti-drinking stance, Covid has just given them the tools to wield more control over it, the welfare of the people is their last concern.

I'm pretty sure the regime would keep these restrictions in place permanently if they could - look how many they brought in before Covid.

If only the govt. could get rid of alcohol and sex, Thais would know happiness and the dear leader could stay in power for ever and ever amen. (or whatever the Buddhist equivalent is to amen)
