Four persons were killed when the pickup truck they were travelling in was rammed by a Bangkok-Hua Hin passenger train in Cha-am district of Phetchaburi province before noon today.

The tragic crash happened at a railway level crossing near Ban Huaysai Nua railway station in Cha-am at about 11.40 am.

The victims included a woman, all from the same family.

The truck was traversing an illegal crossing in Cha-am district when the special train from Bangkok to Suan Son Padiphat with 140 tourists aboard struck the vehicle and pushed it 700 metres down the track.

The governor said the train agency had told the Cha-am municipality office to shut the crossing as a legal alternative with automatic barrier was only 150 metres away. But local residents still opposed the closure.

I guess that this damage will polish out ok. Both drivers walked (or run?) away! The artic driver had the presence of mind to disconnect the trailer and drive the prime mover away.

Three killed, three injured in Udon van crash
Two Buddhist devotees on a pilgrimage and their driver were killed and three others seriously injured when their chartered van crashed into a median strip in Non Sa-at district on Sunday morning.

The accident occurred between kilometre markers 399 and 400 on Mittraphap Road (Khon Kaen-Udon Thani) when a van with six people, including the driver, crashed into the central median strip and ploughed into a traffic sign post and another two lampposts before over-turning.

None Sa-at police investigator Pol Capt Prasit Jiamjai said it was believed the van driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He said there were hardly any braking skid marks at the scene.

Forty-five year-old van driver Suchart Promraksa died at the scene while the five passengers were critically hurt and trapped in the wrecked vehicle. Rescuers used cutting tools to pull the injured out of the van.

Two injured passengers, Siriporn Masakul, 54, and a woman known only as Banyathip, 25, were later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Pol Capt Prasit said the group hired Suchart to drive them from Bangkok to the north-eastern province of Nong Bua Lam Phu where they were to make merit at a temple. They left Bangkok on Saturday at 8pm.

A pickup truck driver was killed when his truck was rammed by a Bangkok-Butterworth passenger train at a railroad crossing in Thacharng district of Surat Thani province shortly after midnight Thursday.

Killed in the terrifying level crossing crash at 1.30 am was Mr Chalard Thongsom, 32, a resident of Surat Thani.

The incident happened at the level crossing near Wat Amparam Thung-ao in Tambon Klongsai.

Witnesses told police the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck ran on the railway crossing just at the same time when the train approached.

The truck was hit in the middle, throwing the driver out of his truck.

He died on the spot near his badly damaged truck.

The incident did not disrupt the train service as the Bangkok-Butterworth train No 35 was allowed to continue its journey to the South after rescue workers cleared the track and sent the dead to nearby police station awaiting identification by relatives.

PHETCHABURI -- Seven people were killed and 25 others injured when a double-decker tour bus bound for Bangkok from Chumphon overturned in Muang district early on Monday, police said.

Pol Lt Surakij Woranam, duty officer of Muang district police station, said the accident occurred about 3.15am on a curve near Ban Hua Don in tambon Hua Saphan.

Police and rescuers found four men and two women dead at the scene. One of the men was the driver, identified as Lersak Taen-in, 46. The other five were not yet identified.

Twenty-five passengers were injured. They were admitted to Phra Chomklao, Khao Yoi, Muang Phet-Thonburi and Phetcharat hospitals. One of the injured died at a hospital, taking the confirmed death toll to seven.

Phum Arunchote, 41, a passenger, said the bus departed Chumphon about 9.30pm. As the bus was nearing tambon Hua Saphan in Phetchaburi's Muang district he felt it was wobbling and going faster, prompting him to buckle up the seat belt.

At a curve near Ban Hua Don, the bus ran off the road, hit a power pole and overturned. He said most of the passengers had not fastened their safety belts and were thrown out of their seats by the violent crash.

The power post was broken by the impact, causing a brief power outage in the area.

Pol Lt Surakij said he initially believed the accident happened because the driver was asleep at the wheel. An investigation would establish the actual cause, he added.

I cringe now to open this thread when it pops up. One lesson is very clear though, don't EVER, EVER take a bus here on a long late night or overnight trip. Pete

I passed the incident around 6am this morning as they were lifting the bus out of the jungle. I also saw the full extent of the damage to the bus when I returned this afternoon. By the state of it I'm surprised the death toll wasn't higher. Too fast and a tired driver comes to mind but let's wait and see.

Looks like the habit of "the driver fled the scene" is catching on with other nationalities as well.

Briton flees after 2 killed in pickup-car crash

A British man allegedly crashed his Mercedes Benz into the rear of a pickup truck resulting in the death of its two occupants in Chiang Mai’s San Sai district on Wednesday night. Following the accident at 11.30pm, police rushed to the Chiang Mai-Doi Saket Road in Tambon Sannameng to find the bodies of Pattaraporn Inthajak and Janthiang Changprakob at the scene. The Briton had fled.

San Sai deputy superintendent Pol Lt-Colonel Pongsak Reunkaew said police found the passport of British national Simon Wellings, believed to be the driver, inside the car along with a computer notebook and money. Another sedan, which was tailing the Benz, also couldn't stop in time and ended up hitting the truck. The sedan driver Sukij Simakul was slightly injured
