I guess that a hybrid car would suit those who drive mainly modest distances - the school run, local supermarket, of if you work locally - most hybrids have a range of about 30 miles and some can be recharged by the car while being driven, others plugged into the mains for a slow overnight recharge. If you do frequent long journeys, hybrids do not offer significant fuel/emissions savings over combustion engines.

Ah sorry, I think that you will find that a "Hybrid" electric car has a range more than a car with just an IC engine.
The engine drives a generator to charge the traction battery, PLUS there is a lot of "free" energy obtained from the regenerative braking system that also charges the battery. Don't know that there are any Hybrids that can be charged from a mains charger.

Although I didn’t specifically mention it, I was thinking of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) that can be plugged into a wall charger for overnight charging. No need to get into a technical debate because it’s not an area where I’m anything close to being an expert, but as I’m sure you’re aware, there are different types of technology available and PHEV’s are fairly common.

For sure the technology is ever expanding and changing, but the point being made in this instance is the lack of public charging outlets in Thailand, which leads to whether or not a Hybrid is more of a practical alternative than a pure electric battery car. Also mentioned previously, not everyone lives in a private detached house where you can plug in a mains powered charger. I think both you and me will be well gone before the infrastructure in this country catches up with the rest of the World.

A couple of times in my life I've been stuck for transport because all the petrol stations were closed, either because of civil unrest or fuel shortages.
That happened to me in the early 70's, in California. I bought a bike. After that, I kept a container of fuel on hand for emergencies.

If you could buy a decent electric car in Thailand, I'd have it connected to solar panels on the roof. I was in my colleagues electric Hyundai the other day and it's awesome, the road was wet and it's so silent that you could hear the tyres squishing water off the road. It makes conventional cars seem like steam traction engines in comparison.

I've been told that the cars are so quiet that pedestrians can't hear them coming. I wonder if this had led to an increase in auto accidents involving pedestrians?

I’m not aware that it is a legislative requirement as yet, but some manufacturers in the UK have already introduced artificial noise to counter this issue.

You can still see them, they're quiet, not invisible.

They can cause a bit of a shock though in shopping mall parking lots where Thai drivers seldom wait to pull out of a space because a person is walking. I got shocked by one some years ago by a person driving one of those original Toyota hybrids in stealth mode. With a normal car I would have heard the engine running and given the slot a wide berth. It makes you jump!

The devil is in the details. Look at the fiasco with the conversion by some shops (or DIY owners) from petrol to LPG or similar. As usual there will be absolutely no proactive approach to certification and inspection. It will all happen after some crisis and/or mass consumer complaints.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) is studying how to develop a low-cost electric car battery to make it much more affordable for car owners who want to convert their vehicles to electric ones, said assistant governor for Research, Innovation and Business Development Jiraporn Sirikum.

The move is part of the state agency’s EV Kit & Blueprint Project in cooperation with the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre and the National Science and Technology Development Agency.

The project aims to enable Thais to convert their old cars into electric vehicles at a cost not exceeding Bt200,000 (excluding the price of the battery).

The project has three phases.

The first phase (2010-2016) has been completed, with the conversion of some Honda Jazz and Toyota Vios models into electric cars.

The second phase, with a budget of Bt60 million, began in 2017 and will be completed next year.

The third phase is set to begin next year.

After this last phase is completed, the project will come out with a blueprint, which will be the standard for conversion of conventional cars into electric vehicles. It will subsequently seek out qualified car repair garages and provide knowledge to them in installing the EV kits.

If nothing else, this part of it is true!
Few will have heard of Jackson’s extraordinary invention. The reason, he says, is that since he and his company Metalectrique Ltd came up with a prototype a decade ago, he has faced determined opposition from the automobile industry establishment.
Fuel cells per se are not new, but the present ones use hydrogen, which is just not a safe option for cars. Good luck to him! :thumb:

Is that a diesel generator running it?
