WILFRED (US version)

Its not often I laugh my nuts off at a series, but this little gem is a real corker. Every single episode has me in fits of giggles at least once.

The basic premise is that Ryan, a pretty straight laced company exec, has a breakdown and tries to commit suicide after his long term girlfriend leaves him. Having failed at that thanks to his sister replacing his sleeping pills with sugar tablets, he is about to try again when his foxy new neighbor asks him to mind her dog while she has her house fumigated. Ryan agrees in an attempt to curry favor with her, only to his horror to find he and he alone sees Wilfred the dog as a six foot foul mouthed Aussie bloke in a furry dog suit who likes to smoke weed, drink beer, and rub himself against womens legs. Wilfred is also a master at getting his own way by mentally or verbally blackmailing Ryan. In return Wilfred leads Ryan on an unabashedly foul and slapsticky journey of self discovery. Let the laughs begin.

Its laugh out loud funny, and when it is rude its in a sort of nice way, even at its most rude. Definite recc for cheering yourself up on a grey day. Series 1 to 3 are now complete, and season 4 is mid airing.

Get at it!

A couple of sci-fi series.

FRINGE (as in fringe science). Made in 2008, set in present time. Slightly quirky, some decent acting, occasional slight hints of X Files without the aliens.

EXTRACT. New series just starting. Set at some unspecified point in the future, probably later this century. Halle Berry is an astronaut who has just returned from a year alone in space with an interesting medical condition... Oh, and her young 'son' is a human/robot hybrid with some attitude problems.

Just finished season 2 of Hannibal. Both seasons are excellent.

Thrilling to see the psychopath at work, even when the FBI are onto him, he is still many steps ahead of their games.

OUTLANDER

Based (quite closely, judging by the first episode) on the books by Diana Gabaldon. An English nurse is mystically transported from post-war (WW2) Scotland back to the 18th century, where the brave, dispossessed Scots are being cruelly repressed by the evil Sassenachs (how appropriate!).

Fantasy, historical drama, romance, adventure galore, a wee helping of tasteful nooky: what more could you ask!

Should bolster the Yes vote...

Gomorrah-La serie

I am really enjoying this and cannot wait for the next episode. Although subtitled is is one of the best series on TV for a long time.
The series’ first 12-episode season follows Ciro (Marco D’Amore), the up-and-coming right hand of the Savastano family boss, Pietro (Fortunato Cerlino), and his bovine son, Genny (Salvatore Esposito). Rival clans fight for control of the marketplace, and violent retribution is as diplomatic as it gets. Archetypal narrative arcs are drawn as soon as the clan’s patriarch is arrested, creating a power vacuum; although Genny is next in line, as per the blood laws that govern organized crime, it’s Ciro who seems the most credible and competent heir apparent.

A Touch of Cloth

Sky1 series spoofs police procedural shows. LOL funny. In the same vein as the Police Squad! US TV series and the movie Airplane! Season 1, episode 1 includes a bit from 'Kentucky Fried Movie', the first film by the guys who made Airplane! 'Cloth' didn't steal that bit, they were paying homage to the masters. A must see for fans of Airplane! or Police Squad!

Writers can quickly run out of such material, which may explain why each season had 2 episodes.

I downloaded it from PirateBay.

DOCTOR WHO

Doctor Who was very much a part of my pre-teen childhood. When it was reintroduced in 2005 I ignored it as a children's programme. For some reason I decided to have a look recently. The first new series had Christopher Ecclestone as a fairly traditional, eccentric Doctor and Billie Piper as his sidekick. There was a flirtatiousness in this relationship that was (not surprisingly) absent from the 60s-70s version. There was always a hint of darkness to the Doctor and that remains.

Much to my surprise, it really isn't a children's programme any more. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that I'd keep any child under about 11 a million miles away from it! If I was pleasantly terrified by the early Doctor Who at age 6, I can only think I'd have been a quivering, blubbering wreck watching the modern version.

Yes, there is still the occasional silly episode, but by and large I find this an entertaining, intelligent and amusing sci-fi series. David Tennant is the Doctor in season 2 (season 8 is being broadcast at the moment) and is also excellent. Piper, the urchin Cockney, has been replaced as the sidekick by the delightfully easy-on-the-eye Freema Agyeman.

Highly recommended for sci-fi fans d'un certain age...

I wasn't allowed to watch Doctor Who with my older siblings as it was considered too disturbing for my sensitive psyche. Now that Peter Capaldi (the sweary man from 'In the Thick of It' and 'In the Loop') is in the starring role, it's required viewing in the J.J.B. household.

I was also recently introduced to 'Sons of Anarchy', a US show chronicling the ways and deeds of a Hell's Angels subgroup and I've been impressed so far.
