Re: The Rugby Thread

Post by pharvey »

Well, as anyone who got to watch the matches will attest to, Round 2 of the Rugby Championship was quite something!!

NZ vs SA: 35 - 20

The AB's blew the Boks away in the 1st 15 odd minutes, racing into a 17-0 lead, it was certainly one-way traffic for the 1st quarter, but the Boks did finally wake up to halt the onslaught - at HT, the AB's going in with a 20-3 lead. There was a fightback from SA in the 2nd Half after the "Bomb Squad" came on which made things interesting, but ultimately (sadly) NZ took the match at 35-20. The AB's record in Auckland is quite incredible - they have not lost a test there since 1994  This Test was at Mount Smart Stadium, the better known ground to most of us is Eden Park of course.

The "Blackness" are in the same Pool as France in the upcoming RWC and will meet in the opening game - that could be quite the match!! :thumb:

Aus vs Argentina: 31 - 34

Another exciting match IMHO despite errors by both teams and a 2nd loss (in his 2nd match in charge) for Eddie Jones & the Wallabies  They now have 2 Test matches against NZ coming up which will no doubt raise a few concerns for the Wallabies and their supporters!

NOTE: The 2nd of the 2 Tests does not form part of the Rugby Championship, it's part of the annual "Bledisloe Cup" series played between the 2.

Anywho, the match!! I didn't think the Ref was that good and he (and the TMO) missed several things - a clear forward pass by the Wallabies leading up to their 1st try for instance. It really would have been a travesty if Aus had won the match with that "non-try" being a decisive factor,

The Wallabies were much improved after the Bok (2nds  ) took them apart in Round 1, but their poor discipline and penalty count against them here was again a major problem.

The Pumas had the vast majority of the possession, but still needed a last minute try to get a well deserved win. Some scrappy moments, some cr@p refereeing, handling errors galore, some "tetchy moments", some great defence and attack and ultimately a thoroughly enjoyable match I thought :thumb:. Cheika will no doubt be a tad smug getting one over on his opposite number Eddie Jones  These two could well be meeting up in the Quarter Finals of the RWC in the not distant future.....

Moving to the HHF/Superbru Prediction League: -

With the Rugby Championship only being played over 3 Rounds in this RWC year, Bonus Points were going to be critical. BigBoy stormed into the lead in Round 1 taking 1.5 pts, but Dai_L has blown us all away with 3 Bonus pts in Round 2 and jumps 5 places to take the lead :banghead:
BigBoy moves down to 2nd place, but still well in it after taking 2 Bonus Points himself

Just as an aside, Dai_L is not a member of the Forum, but we've known each other since we were kids. He's joined many of the HHF/Superbru leagues previously.

Realistically, the title for our "little league" :D is between the Top 2, BUT Dai_L has shown us anything is possible!!

Not that you'll be interested in such menial matters, but just for the info. of other members - Superbru are running a Prediction League. I won't be setting up for the Forum, but will do so for the RWC itself once this weekend of Championship Rugby is done and dusted.

Well, the final round of the Rugby Championship is upon us. The Wallabies host the Blackness in Melbourne. Jones has made changes to the side, most notably with a change in the Half-Backs..... Quade Cooper who has always been a bit of an enigma, but on his day can turn a game on it's head, drops to the bench. I wonder at what stage we'll see him! Australia will be hoping for a miracle methinks, but with Wayne Barnes reffing, who knows...  :D

KO is 10:45 (BST).

The Boks end the Championship at home to the Pumas, KO 16:05 (BST) :? Have to say, this "could" well be a very good game...... BUT, if SA sort out the silly errors and the Pumas fail to improve in the tight - this is only going to go one way. The Argies also need to keep the ball as far away as possible from that bleedin' wing Arendse!!

Apologies - a tad late on parade (once again)...

Pretty much the result/scoreline I was expecting for the Aus vs NZ, but certainly not how I was expecting the teams to reach it!! The Wallabies came out up for it and well and truly took the game to the "Blackness" in the 1st 30 mins or so. There were a fair few young(er) and somewhat inexperienced players in the Aus lineup (especially at Flyhalf), which, added to the ill-discipline (2 Yellows) ultimately cost them dearly.... The Wallabies were 7-5 up on the 30 min mark, 7-19 down at HT and 7-38 down come the (welcome) final whistle... Australia and Eddie Jones have a great deal of work to do before the RWC!! It's probably not going to help have to visit the "Blackness" at home next weekend for a second Bledisloe Cup match... NOTE: NZ have already retained the cup for a staggering 21 years running!!

As for the Boks vs the Pumas - Not the scoreline I was predicting and sooo close to a win for the Pumas!! Argentina were the better side in the 2nd half and only a breakaway try against the run of play gave the Boks (a lucky IMHO) win. 22-21 at the final whistle..... God, there's some exiting matches coming up in "just" the Pool Stages of the RWC :thumb:

Pool A - France vs NZ (Opening Game)
Pool B - SA vs Ireland
Pool C - Wales vs Australia
Pool D - England vs Argentina

Final Superbru/HHF Prediction League: -

After the 1st Round, I honestly thought BigBoy was going to be untouchable after taking an early 1.5 point lead in what was seeming a fairly "predictable" tournament.... No such thing!! Dai_L comes back with a massive 5 pt round to knock BB off top spot. So, the Top 2 decided then? DL on 6 points, BB on 5 with a 4-way tie for 3rd spot with 3 points........ Nope, PeteC fires back with a huge 5 point 3rd and final round!! Ultimately, PeteC takes the title (though tied on 8 points with Dai_L. BigBoy makes up the "Podium" with 3 place.

Congrats to PeteC on the Yellow Cap and title, and a big thank you for setting up the league again this season - a close one it was too!! :thumb:

Bit of an unusual Final Table with all members shown as having won both the Yellow Cap AND Wooden Spoon... Ho hum.

Whilst there's no F1 on this weekend and of course there is the "Girly Wendyball World Cup", there is (thank the Lord) also a shed load of Rugby on!!

Not saying I haven't watched a bit of the WWC though......

As DM kindly pointed out, there are several matches being screened on "Amazon Prime" - some however NZ vs Aus for example, will be televised on Sky Sports, but all should be available on the Live Streams such as Buffstreams.sx - The Bledisloe match (NZ vs Aus) is at silly-o'clock for me here in the UK, but suited well for you guys in HH/Thailand/Asia :thumb:

Several weeks to come, but here are the highlights for this coming Saturday (all times shown BST): -

Flanker Michael Hooper and fly-half Quade Cooper have been left out of Australia's World Cup squad by coach Eddie Jones.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/66461355

Both those gentlemen will end their international and local rugby careers on a very, very sorry and bitter note.

Eddie Jones appears desperate, and I really don't think they'll do well in the WC. His job is on the line, again.

I read about this earlier - very sad state of affairs quite frankly. Sad end indeed for some great players... :( :(

As for Jones, I never really understood how he got to the level(s) he has....

As mentioned previously, I will get around to sort out an HHF League on Superbru.

Looking forward to the rugby Saturday providing the Internet connection where I am currently holds up!!

Well, well, goodness gracious me, that was truly extraordinary. I was about to congratulate Wales on scoring a try against 12 men, when it became clear what England's main problem had been - namely, starting with 15 men!

More seriously, England clearly have a lot of work to do if they want to make a serious challenge for the World Cup, and I do wonder if Farrell hasn't become more of a liability than an asset. The much overlooked George Ford was in a different class altogether.

The last quarter was sad to watch from a Wales perspective. So many screwed up line outs and unforced errors. It was like watching the bottom drop out. Chin up Pharvey, better days coming.
