Not consumed in terms of eaten or any deliberate action, not cattle or the like, Not evaporation in the strictest sense of the word.

Are we talking about a food product? A crop of some kind? Grain? Rice?

What is lighter as time goes by without drying as the major issue, or deliberate consumption (I thought fuel products for a bit)?

Like I said, most will be very surprised. I had no idea either until I watched a recent History Channel show. It's not really something taught in schools, unless I presume you live where the product originated, which was New England. Pete

No, not salt but you could say in a certain form it resembles salt in appearance.

I'm running out of clues! It was highly prized by Queen Victoria. She couldn't get enough of it and sung it's praises constantly.
