One military source said army, navy and air force top brass were locked in talks late into the night debating whether to launch a coup only two years after the removal of Thaksin.

I was watching this on SBS world news here in Australia and they said that the Queen was backing the protesters...

Has anyone heard anything of this in the Thai media because that is a BIG statement?

I know I should not enter into discussion about the family on here (sorry mods) but I am 100% sure I heard it and my wife was sitting next to me heard it also.

From MSNBC:
None of this is openly discussed by the Thai media, which is shackled by strict lèse-majesté laws which make it a crime to offend the monarchy, but the future of the Chakri Dynasty goes to the heart of the current power struggle.

One seasoned journalist summed it up nicely: "Covering this crisis is like trying to explain the unexplainable, without mentioning the unmentionable."

STEVE G,

The article that you posted gives a pretty biased view on what has happened in the last 2-3 years.

I am no supporter of either side because I do not fully know what is going on, I will admit that much, but I do know enough to know that article is not informing why PAD are doing what they are doing.

There is no mention of vote buying and Thaksin's charges. Also, the article describes PAD as being anti-democratic...since when is vote buying democratic.

They make the PAD sound like a bunch of cry babies who have not got their way.

Which would sum them up very well.

How long before the Isaan masses involve themselves?

Cozza, I was just using that article for its reference at the end to the Thai medias problems on reporting anything to do with the monarchy in response to your post above.

So you think the PAD thugs are from Isaan?

Do you think the Isaan people would fight to have their own voting rights taken away for a few lousy baht?

I dont see how you can slate Steve G link when you dont know the arse from the elbow.

Not always, during the earlier PAD demonstrations at Government house, they were trying to recruit people from Issan for 1000 bt a day for frontline positions and 500 bt a day inside the grounds.
In my partners area there were no takers.

STEVE G,

I honestly apologise for sounding like I was 'slating you'. I was not meaning to at all.

Thank you for the response and the article about the monarchy.

I was just trying to point out my opinion about what was written in that article and my opinion was that it was biased and only gave half the story. My response was not meant to be personal in any way, only an opinion. I would like to hear any constructive thoughts you or anyone else has on this, even if it is biased, but if it is, it should be always noted as being so.

I realise this a sensitive topic and many people feel very strongly about it, but the media should not have too much opinion.

Reread this part of Steves link.

What do they want?

The PAD's leaders want the government replaced by "new politics," effectively doing away with the current democratic system and limiting the electoral power of poorer voters, who they regard as ill-educated.

Instead, they want 70 percent of parliament to be appointed by worthy people – such as themselves. The government would be headed by a powerful king, whose portrait is everywhere at PAD rallies.

One newspaper column this week described their ideology as "a cultish and violent conservatism," combined with a "mangled version of democracy."

Their target, the government of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, is hardly a virtuous beast, but it was democratically elected, and enjoys massive support from Thailand's rural poor. If there was an election tomorrow, it would almost certainly be re-elected, which is why the PAD wants to change the system.

Somchai is the brother-in-law of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, who was disposed in the 2006 coup. He has been accused of widespread corruption and abuse of power, but his administration redrew Thailand's political landscape, empowering the rural poor, and adopting populist polices, including low cost village loans, and a basic health system.

These reforms came as shock in a system which has for years been, essentially, a competition within the Thai elite – the poor north-east serving as a repository of cheap labor for Bangkok's bars and building sites.

Thaksin's populism also threatened a traditional system of patronage and hierarchy, at the pinnacle which sits the royalist elite, who are the PAD's strongest supporters.

The current government is packed with Thaksin cronies, and the former prime minister, now in self-imposed exile, is accused of calling the government's shots from abroad. He has drawn massive crowds to live stadium phone-ins and remains very popular in the poor north and north-east of Thailand.

Sorry Cozza, maybe I should have worded it "Dismissing Steves link"

It was my wording, not Steve.
