I can't believe this post is even necessary in 2009. You call a good, long-standing friend (of Pakistani origin) of yours 'a daft Paki' and I'm sure he'll genuinely laugh along with you, just as an over-sized white friend might (or might not) laugh if you called him a silly fat twat. You say the same thing to a complete stranger and it takes on a different meaning altogether.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is offence. It's so obvious it really shouldn't need to be debated.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is offence.

I do agree completely with the above few posts.

Howver, the owrd is still offensive.

I have friends that I can call a 'complete c@nt' and they will laugh.

However, this does not make 'c@nt' a nice word! The word and its true and clear meaning remains the same.

The same is true of Paki

It is at our risk and our judgement to know know when we can break the rules.

I'm sure one or 2 will claim to have Pakistani (or other ethic) friends that they can safely call a 'Paki c@nt', but the meaning doesn't change, only the social atmosphere, and the personal relationship permits this type of talk.

It ain't rocket science hhf - if you call me a stupid limey asshole without smiling the first time we meet, you probably get a slap. You certainly don't get a beer or a new friend. If you call me the same thing 6 months later when we are good friends with a laugh and a smile, we all have a good laugh.

Actually my comparison was wrong - beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but offence is in the mind of the offended. And it should be on the mind of the potential offender.

Let's make it really simple (though I didn't think it needed to get much simpler... ) - it's pretty obvious if offence is intended by any remark, and if it's intended it will almost certainly be taken.

I'm bored with this now.

No offence...
