Land Office Scam
Re: Land Office Scam
miked, what do you do, if the police stops you for some flimsy reason, e.g. driving too long on the fast lane?
Do you pay 200 Baht and drive on or do you fight corruption and pay 2000 Baht at the police station?

I admire your moral standpoint and take the same stance on corruption by refusing to pay wherever I can. However I must ask you some questions on exact real situations I have been in.
Buying a plot of land I was given the choice of sitting around for hours and stumping up just shy of 50k or slipping 1k in the envelope with the chanote, going straight to the front of the queue and paying just over 8k. What would you do?
Having been stopped multiple times and been given the option to pay on the spot or go to the station and pay double, which they divvy up anyway,. What would you do?
Getting an internet connection to my house and a phoneline with number. 1600 bt or wait another 4 years? What should I do?

It's usually business related to us, and we're paying on behalf of our customers most of the time. And no, we do not feel the need to tell them either, to save you another clumsy loaded questionmiked wrote:SJ wrote
I don't just pay it to get my way
why do you pay it then. do you enjoy it. ??? does it make you feel superior. ?
getting it may way is as cheap and as quickly as possible.
miked

Why do you think it's ok to pay it just 'to get your way' Mike? You seem to have confused principles on the issue, with respect.
As to why you consider someone may actually be happy, or feel superior to give away their families money is a strange one that I'll leave you to explain. Is this how you feel whenever you 'get your own way' ? Paying is usually a discreet, away from preying eyes act isn't it, how can would that make you feel superior, there's no VIP lounge at the land office you know

Which choice is the intelligent one?
"if you can't work it out just pay the money".
I can understand it Miked it's you who seem confused on the issue.
Personally, I have never paid to get "my way" and never been asked to pay to get "my way". I'm at a loss to think of why the Thais seem to pick on you.
I have however, paid a traffic violation fine (I was in the wrong on that occasion) but I did not pay it "to get my way" I paid it, so the BIB could "get their way"
My question "which choice is the intelligent one?" was, for you, a rhetorical one, but even if it was not, you could not answer it, as you seem so confused on the issue. (pay the least you can, or pay nothing!!!!)
It's simple if you want something but have to pay "extra" to get it, you either pay and hang your head in shame or go without and hold your head up high.
You seem to be quite happy to do the former, yet moan all the time about corruption in Thailand!!!!
It seems to have escaped your notice but you are in Thailand, not Oxford street and no amount of moaning or posting about "corruption" here in the LOS will do you any good. The only cure is an economy ticket home.
But don't pay extra for it will you.

Miked, I honestly believe you are totally wrong with your statement that SJ enjoy giving his money away. A free beer from him is just something you can dream about!!
How on earth did you come up with a conclusion like that?
We (who lives here) sometimes have to face the reality of living here.
If not just head back home because here it's just a way of our normal life.
You can either accept it or not, but tea money or whatever you call it, is not and never, something you happily pay or like, but something you are forced to accept it if you want the job done.
Who on earth likes it but I bet you can't stop or prevent it, even if you try.

i live here and have done so for many years. my wife and myself have property here and my wife also has a successful wholesale company.i have to spend 3 months of the year back in the U.K. for business reasons. i think i understand the reality of living here as well as anyone.
never having met SJ i have concluded that he likes giving money away from various posts he has made on this forum. if you say he is tight i am very happy to accept that.

I assume that you read up on Thailand before you graced its shores, so you must have known what the country was like, yet you still came here!
SO, STOP MOANING PLEASE.

If you don't want to pay tea money to anyone, then stay in, lock your doors and windows, turn out the light and then we have not got to see you whining about a few Baht in every post you make.
I say this because you go on and on about tea money/corruption, and in the same breath seem happy to pay it, all be it at a reduced rate. I quote you here "the intelligent course is avoid it or pay the minimum amount to get your way."
So, it seems you are doing your bit to reinforce the view, that we farangs are walking ATMs, then spending the rest of your day moaning about it.
As SJ said "You seem to have confused principles on the issue."
I bet your wifes "successful wholesale company" pays tea money to grease the wheels, but for an easy life she doesn't tell you.

As Norseman said
"Who on earth likes it but I bet you can't stop or prevent it, even if you try".
As for me flying economy to Thailand, we fly business on all our flights, (unless we get bumped to 1st) otherwise we may get seated next to someone for 12 hours, moaning non stop about the corruption in Thailand .

Nothing personal.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

the property here is of course in my wife's name but we consider it ours. but she paid for it not me. we got fed up of waiting for the baht rate to improve before bringing money from the U.K. not all thai ladies marry for money and security, some already have it.
you seem to be jealous that i am buying property in England. ?? both will be from auction and both will be in south east England and both will be cash. i will happily p.m. you with the 2 auction contracts attached and whatever you wish to see.
