look at it this way - while our bones will be already rotting in some graveyard in
Thailand , you can still look forward to your big move.
Unless the world ends, before you get a chance to finish your count!
Kind regards,

Christ Mike, I would hope some of you lucky feckers would wait around for a little while at least to point me in the right direction before popping your cloggs!!
I'll be looking forward to the BIG move for quite a few years to come, but at least for the moment we have a small place in HH which we'll use for as many visits as we can!!
Would hope to meet up with as many on here as we can on the way......

Hey MajorMike B,
I have a good buddy in Chicago with a Philippino wife and he would kill to retire in Thailand. He fell in love with LOS about 25 years ago and only visited once before meeting his current wife. She'll be happy to retire in the Philippines, but won't even discuss Thailand(as I think she knows his feelings and his weakness ). Look forward to meeting someday - hopefully sooner than my current plans allow.

Pharvey,
I thought I was obsessing about retirement a little too early, but now I feel a little better. Actually, for me, it helps when I'm stressed to dream about the future. You have a place in Hua Hin, me in Cha-am and it every time I go, I totally relax and can't wait for the day I can stay longer term there. Weird at my age to actually look forward to gettin older

Big Boy,
well, beating me to the date of my retirement was bad enough, but now you will
even make it to Hua Hin earlier than us.
Do you plan to buy a house like us?
We hope to depart in June.
Coldmike,
my wife and I had been planning to settle in the Philippines for years, until we got to watch
a documentary on German tv about German immigrants in the Philippines being ripped off by
Filipino crooks. Some of them were detained under some false pretence. One of them returned
to his home only to find out that total strangers had occupied his house and all his belongings were gone. Filipino crooks regard all foreigners as affluent easy prey. Even the police will collaborate with the crooks, and there is no rule of law. You must be a millionaire to be confident to be able to bribe all the people involved in a con.
One of my wife's brothers was re-elected mayor in a small provincial town. His son and daughter-in-law were ambushed by killers in the service of his political rival. His son was killed, his daughter-in-law only survived by pretending to be dead. Everyone knows the perpetrators, but no one dares to press charges.
Also my wife is not eager to find relatives besieging our house every day to beg for support.Lol
So wishing you all a great weekend wherever you may be,
Take care!

We'll be renting for a couple of months while we decide what we want, and will then buy.
Congratulations to BB and Major on upcoming retirement. I am in the same boat and if my company go ahead with their redundancy./Saudisation programme I will be in HH at the end of Jan 2012 and looking forward to 'early' retirement
(So be prepared for the retirement visa question....).
Back in HH in October for BIG celebration then briefly for Xmas and New Year before full retirement.
I wish you both well and I presume our paths will cross at sometime.

Mike MajorB,
My friend also has high anxiety about ever living in the Phillipines and even is apprehensive before each visit. He's very worried about violence and kidnapping for ransom. You also hit one of his sore spots... he's a very generous guy, but he gets tired of playing Santa Claus each and every time he visits.

I'm telling you guys, the first 6 months you'll be euphoric. After that, you'll start to miss the work. You can't do something most of your adult life and not have residual effects, some bad but on the whole probably good memories and experiences. Thus the importance to latch on to some kind of regular mental and/or physical activity quickly. If you don't, you'll get old fast. Pete

Have to say this thread has been very enjoyable to follow.
I am in the same boat as a lot of you, happily married to the most wonderful Thai lady, we have our own house in HH which took many visits to locate and buy.
Retirement, hmmmm. I wish I could be more specific as some of you with a time frame. Bottom line with current world economics difficult to pin a date.
I second Pete's comments regarding boredom. Really need plenty of interests.
Will any of you be in HH over the Christmas period??.
