beer prices
Re: beer prices
You still don't see Beer Lao very often in HH so I can only thing the Thai beer companies are blocking it, at least to a certain extent. I also don't think there's much demand for it. Yes, tourists and expats may drink it, but my guess is very few Thais will. They will drink Heineken but that's a western beer, and it costs quite a bit more than Thai beer, so the whole status game comes into play. Drinking a beer made in an inferior neighboring country just doesn't do one's image any good.

Re: beer prices
Prices sound pretty reasonable to me.
Current Aussie prices - front bars in Darwin. You pay more in bars that attract the tourists. You also pay more in night clubs and Lounge bars.
A full english size pint of Cider $8 about 265 baht.
Tap beer - schooner (3/4 pint, 425ml) around the $5 mark depending on brand.say 165 baht.
Bottle beer (330ml or 375ml) - $6 upwards 200baht

Ah, but the average Australian earns more than the average Thai, although of course I understand that Thais don't drink at these venues.

Nat Bar at the bottom end of Binta has Beer Lao at 100B/bottle.
Talking of beer-prices..my Mrs has just had a guy in for 2 nights running..2 beers last night, one tonight, but each time took a photo of his bin before handing it back c/w the money..???
Can anyone explain that action? (it's a new one on me).

Seriously, there is some overnight hiking going on. Bar in soi 80 was running happy hour with beers around 45 to 50. Overnight happy hour scrapped and across the board pricing of 65 to 80 all day without notice
Some restaurants also now seem to be introducing vat without displaying on their chalk board menus.
what are the rules re VAT anyway? Is it turnover driven or what?

Re: beer prices
Anyone got any recommendations for a bar with a good (cheap) happy hour where you can sit, read the paper, watch the world go by and not be called a 'hansum' man?
Re: beer prices
Am sure Beer Lao doesn't travel well. Can remember it tasting amazing in Lao but like cat wee when I had it again later in Bangkok.Takiap wrote:You still don't see Beer Lao very often in HH so I can only thing the Thai beer companies are blocking it, at least to a certain extent. I think you're kind of asking to have your cake and eat it there.Doggles wrote:Anyone got any recommendations for a bar with a good (cheap) happy hour where you can sit, read the paper, watch the world go by and not be called a 'hansum' man?
I don't think there are many bars with happy hours here, and the ones that do would certainly be in the girl areas.
A good bar to watch the world go by is Retrophillia, above the night market. But it's not particularly cheap. Montri, on the Hilton stretch, has decent prices of Chang beer (just be wary of the big glasses; they work out more expensive bt for bt than the small ones!)
Re: beer prices
Soi 80 has some happy hour bars. There are girls but if your reading a newspaper they will leave you alone

Thanks will look out for them, is Chang beer still crazy strong? If so I don't think I'll be watching for longPleng wrote:
