So the big question is:

Can one get a stamp for a copy of your passport?

Anyone have a DEFINITIVE answer?

They should really issue an expat identity card as a solution to this, periodically renewable. Perhaps required for those staying more than 30 days.

I will carry my passport to avoid the fine, I refuse to give them the satisfaction. But what a pain in the ass this will be.

Even leaving it in the car would likely result in a fine as the passport is not on your person.

In most SE Asian countries, there is never a definitive answer when it comes to dealing with officialdom. The rules are what the particular official stood in front of you has decided that they are, or what he would like them to be, or what he has decided to exploit for personal gain.

It all seems to be very much linked with the clampdown:

Yes, I see the less than positive people!
But as a long time resident, Uni teacher, no shadiness in my background--

Do you think they would stamp and make official a copy rather than carry my original?
Like so many others, your Passport is everything, and if by some chance it is lost, stolen, misplaced or whatever it is a real b$#ch! And, at least for Americans, its expensive to get a new one.

Just asking!!!!

I suppose speculation is inevitable, but it doesn't really help much. There are never any definitive answers here, but it will be a couple of months before we see how things will pan out in the longer term.

I think the suggestion of some form of ID card issued by Immigration to those on long-term extensions is a good one. It won't happen, of course, but it's still a good idea!
This is the way

Nice to see that one was nabbed in our own fair city. Maybe they are sending out a message to the others..."Get out now before we come for you"....only a thought :D

Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Highly unlikely that the Thai Navy Seals are going to use rebreathers to sneak up on you in the hotel pool and check your speedos for the hidden passport and then bust you on the way to the pool shower and ask for the 2k, which is in the same place as the passport nestled in the hotel safe, or bust me when I am walking back home from the local shop to my house where the passport is kept. Keep your passport with you at all times is advised by the UK if you are travelling abroad. I only take mine if I am travelling further than town so if I get a tug it is not far away. Might not cut it with a jobsworth at the moment so up to the individual if they want to take the risk either way.

Failure to produce passport is THB 20,000 fine and jail up to 2 years.............seems a bit harsh

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/nationa ... 39870.html

Immigration Division spokesman Colonel Worawat Amornwiwat said.

"that starting from August 29, foreigners who failed to produce their passports would be fined up to Bt20,000 and jailed for up to two years.

Is this the usual poor reporting, lost in translation or the normal ambiguous statements from Immigration? :?

How does one "produce" a passport, and just WHEN is the act required if you can do it? :banghead:

^ I think that article confused overstay with carrying your passport. Everything I've read says 20k fine is for overstay, for not carrying your passport the fine is 2k baht.

So for you who say you are not going to carry your passport; easy answer. Make sure you always carry 2k baht. :neener:
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
