I've lived in England for about 6 years in total in the past. Every time a major competition comes up I can't help secretly wanting England to do well. Many of my best mates are English. Of course I don't admit this to many of my mates back home. I was up in Skye when England were put out last time by Portugal and most of the Scots in the pub were obviously backing England, even if they did suppress it a bit. I was also in a pub in Leeds the previous time England were put out by Portugal. I was with loads of English. After the match I got so much abuse I went home, on the way watching fans wrecking their own city. My experience of living in England is most English think of us as backwards and a bit of a joke. Many times I've sat with a gritted teeth while I was subjected to what can only be described as racism. It's all considered banter I suppose but it gets on your tits. I'm just glad I don't have to put up with the abuse the English constantly throw at the Welsh.
My point is, maybe more Scots would back England if the English didn't make it so hard. Where exactly are all these English cheering on Scotland? Maybe the English think it's ok to watch their poor wee neighbours brave efforts and give them a pat on the back for trying. Since Scotland have actually started to perform, all I've witnessed is put downs followed by smugness when we fail. As long as the English continue to treat the Scots with an obvious air of superiority the Scots will say F-you.

quite negative thinking d-m.dtaai-maai wrote:I suppose 'hmmm' meant:
1. If England qualify we can count ourselves extremely fortunate.
2. The fact that everything is back in the hands of the England team (thanks to Israel), hardly fills me with confidence.
3. How sad that a home win against Croatia is not a cast iron certainty.
4. Can't agree that we have nothing to fear from France or Italy. I think Cyprus or Andorra might cause us problems at the moment.
if we qualify, its because we did so over the results of 12 games & not thanks to the one result by israel (could say two because israel also took a point in moscow!!)
though i do share your thoughts on not being certs to beat croatia, i think if we do get the result, we will have as much chance of winning the tournament as any of the other qualifying nations.
there are no stand out teams in europe at the moment & with a fully fit squad i think we have as much chance as anyone.
my only concern is the manager, his team selection & tactics are sometimes baffling

If you truly believe that then you are on the slippery slope to sporting oblivion.Big Boy wrote:The good times are bound to come back, these things always work in cycles.
It is what Welsh rugby supporters told themselves for twenty years.....
Now we know better - sporting success happens by design, not by rotation.
Quite a tidy post Kelpie - the bit above particularly well observed. Despite being politically and culturally dominant over their near neighbours for between 300 and 800 years, depending on which part of the British Isles you come from, 'the English' do seem to feel the need to labour the point at every opportunity. Like the playground bully, I think it basically stems from a lack of self confidence and deep down self loathing....KelpieKiss wrote:I'm just glad I don't have to put up with the abuse the English constantly throw at the Welsh.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Hard lines. Bye bye McClaren.
