why fickle?
we're quick to criticise the team when they fail (which is far to often :( ) so why shouldn't we congratulate them on a good performance & a terrific result? :?

England have a similar task with Croatia leading the group
The reference was to a position sometime next year. However, of course, if England can win the group, and this morning's effort shows it's possible, the all the other speculation is irrelevant. England qualify.

and
in the England group there is only one week team and England struggled to beat them.
Big Boy wrote: That is just an England trait - they always struggle against the crap teams.
It certainly looks that way. Hopefully the two unknowns will not be crap then.

Anyway, the most important test of all was this one and England came through. That could well be the score that separates the two teams at the top but the Ukraine could change everything.

None of the top three can afford to lose points to the bottom three.

Still, I believe it to be a tough tight group.

Must be great news for Wanderlust. England winning and the Hamsters recruiting one of the greatest strikers ever on the same day.

I am obviously pleased with the result, and it was a good performance but I don't think it was a great one, simply because Croatia did not play that well, and most of the damage was done after they were down to 10 men (and should have been 9 really). I still see some problem areas, most notably central midfield (I thought Lampard and Barry were largely anonymous, and Lampard's set pieces were poor), while the full backs still worry me. I didn't think Joe Cole played very well either before getting clattered, and Jenas seemed much more effective. Heskey did well but strikers should score goals, so he is not the long term solution (as well as being 30 now), while Rooney put a great deal of effort in and of course scored. Walcott took his chances well but was helped by some terrible Croatian defending. I don't want to get carried away with this result because England is often a rollercoaster ride - lets see what happens after a few more games.

Give credit where its due. This was an excellent result for England, probably their best since we beat Germany 5-1 seven years ago.
I,honestly, thought we would be lucky to get a draw there, given recent performances.
Capello has a nice selection headache when Steven Gerrard returns to fitness.
I think England are the first foreign team to beat "Croatia" (as opposed to the old Yugoslavia) on their home ground ??

So - I'm even more bemused as to why Sven Boring Eriksun selected Walcott for the last World Cup - and promptly didn't play him

A quiz question (Hugo and Terry if you see this, you might be able to used it): What is the nick name of the Finnish national football team?

Didn't realise we were allowed to find the answer.

According to Wickepedia, the answer is "Huuhkajat" (Eurasian eagle-owls).
Championship Plymouth Argyle 1 - 2 Leeds Utd

Points 46; Position 23 RELEGATED

Big Boy, didn´t expect you guys to know Finnish. The answer is correct. They got the nick name when an eagle owl landed on the turf during a Finland vs Belgium match and right after it left, Finland scored and won the match 2-0.

England 5 - 1 Kazakhstan

Another World class team thrashed on their way to South Africa.

The rest of the world must sit up and take note of this English phenomenon. Even when they play as badly as they did tonight, 5 very slick goals.
