Re: History Challenge
Yes, it is - Perrot's folly, Birmingham - possible inspiration for Tolkien's Twin Towers.
Damn, D-M, you're good!
Excuse me, off to polish my nails...

Re: History Challenge
The wonderful thing about this challenge is you know when you are right and can self congratulate.
Damn, D-M, you're good! to quote D-M. (I have family living nearby this folly.)
Follys are not out of fashion. here is a similar one built a few years ago in the Hunter Valley NSW. This private house is only ten stories high to get a sea view 100 kms away. Has been for sale for $A 3.5 M. Could move it to HH using someone like Dr Fred to knock it down

In South Florida, maybe?
Wrong location

It is a bridge but not really called one. Something special about it.
Re: History Challenge
Since we're doing bridges, I'll throw this one in. Pete

Re: History Challenge
This is the 'Barrage de la Rance' near St Malo France
The barrage also acts as a tidal power station.
The locks at the ends give away the tidal aspect plus the photo shows cranes running over hatches covering the turbines.
Nice bit of Gallic engineering.
