The Digital Surgery (computer questions/problems here)
Used my USB memory stick (Sony, 4GB) in an internetshop. Alarmbells went of and it appeared to be full of trojans (from the computer in the shop I guess). I thought the best solution would be to delete everything on it. I checked the thing and it was empty but still using a few MB space. Therefore I decided to format the whole thing. After that it indicated a 100% free space again.
Problem solved. I thought.
So I used it again. Put some files on it. And then the next time I use it with the files on it all the trojans are back.
I formatted it again. Used it for data again and checked with AVG and Malwarebytes. Was told everything is fine and clean. Take it out. Put it back in again and the trojan alarm goes off. So apparently something remains on the USB after formatting. Did not know this is possible?
PS When I use it in other computers I get the same alarms so the nasty cannot come from my notebook, can it? When I for instance put a Word document on it (example.doc) then I will get the message "Threat detected; example.exe (trojan).
Anyone experience with this (and a rigoreus solution maybe?)

One for you gurus out there.
This is a serious problem that has developed over the past 24 hours here in smelly Delhi – and thus far nobody here knows how to fix it.
When creating a new folder in ANY sub folder or on the desktop I cannot get the folder renamed to what I want it to be.
Process is as follows:
1) Right click and then left click ‘New Folder’
2) Right click the new folder and then left click ‘rename’
So far so good
3) Type in new name and dialogue ‘The file or folder does not exist’ appears
4) It then proceeds to call itself ‘New folder 2’, ‘new folder 3’ etc etc
i.e. I cannot label ANY new folders that I make.
All existing folders function normally
Any ideas?

What is the operating system?
Sounds like the user profile has been messed up along with permissions on the desktop. Try creating and naming a folder elsewhere such as C drive or D drive.

Vista
I believe that this was a unilateral act on the part of my laptop!!!!!!!!
As far as I know I did not alter any settings
Just tried opening and renaming a new folder in C & D drives.
New folder appears - but it will not allow me to rename.
When attempting the rename I still get ‘The file or folder does not exist’
Any more suggestions would be welcome
cheers

Can remember having the same problem, but cannot remember how I solved it. However a simple google must get you in the right direction, like this one:

Re: The Digital Surgery
Well that link provided by Roel did the trick - many thanks
All fixed and working ok.
Matters have not been helped by the office 'I.T. Guru' here in the office in Delhi.
He's a half baked *uckwit of the first order
Anyway - back to normal for now - until he screws something else up

Re: The Digital Surgery
I have 3 windows/ibm clones and i came to a realization a few months back....get an apple mac...........everyone i know that owns one DOES not have any problems.
Ive lost all my hair and ive spent more on them than servicing my 2 cars in the past 12 mths.
The IBM think pad when turned on at the start only shows the wallpaper and you got to press Alt Clrl and delite then when the bugger promps come up say no and then everything pops up.
One of my desktop pc's the dvd rom drive has disappeared for the 3rd time, and my football manager game shuts down...mind you ive been playing it for a year now on that pc, at xmas i bought the latest football manager game and it was closing down on me after a short period, at first i thought it might be a dogie copy ( it is brand new) but now realize it must be something else. My movie software package that i use on that pc keeps locking up, and mind you when i had that pc built i stressed that i needed it for editing and creating home movies so it is a fairly powerful pc.....well it should be.
The third pc which i use for surfing the web and downloading finally hasnt had a problem in quite a while and that may be due to the fact i have installed norton 360 it slows the machine down but after all ive been through its a small price to pay for nothing going wrong.
Ive had two computer techs work on my machines over the years, the first one was pretty good but he's gone into real estate now and the guy ive been using is nothing more than a snake oil sales man he talks a lot of shi*, he wouldnt accept that the brand new modem i bought off him recently was faulty, i told the cretin that i was on the phone to my internet provider and then with the modem people for a total of 7 hrs, that they instructed me to return it...i was happy to let him know the new modem he gave me in place of was installed easily within 10 min after talking to modem service dept.
When ever i have a problem the answer has been to reinstall windows, at $AU65 a pop its got expensive, it also wastes a lot of my time putting everything back on ...ie printer, codecs etc.at least the first guy (he charged more) put everything on including a decent anti virus all as part of the costs.
I really dont want any help with this becasue i will get an apple mac sometime this year i just wanted to say that windows and associated software that ive bought leaves a lot to be desired.
I do have one question...are there apple service centers in Hua Hin? I would assume there is in BKK right?

Re: The Digital Surgery
I've been getting a strange pop up window appearing recently. It's prompting me to open a file in Adobe Dreamweaver C53. The file is "ad.php". It's from ........
I've got idea what it is and I never open the file.
Anyone got any ideas what it is and if no good (which I'm assuming it is) then how to get rid of it popping up?
It dosn't show all the time. Normally appears if the computer is idle for 30 mins or so.
Edit: Was just thinking that I'd better delete the URL in case anyone opens it and its got nasties. I'll find out more by PM.

Re: The Digital Surgery
Sounds like spyware/malware from an infected website - DW should never pop windows asking you to open files, you open them from within the program or using right click and 'open with'.
Give the machine a deep scan with http://www.malwarebytes.org

Re: The Digital Surgery
Think the deep scan advise is what you need to do lomu.

Re: The Digital Surgery
Thanks. I've just done the deep scan and there was nothing to worry about.
Trying a full avast scan and spybot as well.

Re:
Sorry to flip back a couple of pages but I've just been bought an EDGE wireless modem job (about 1500 baht and sim from DTAC/12-Call) by the wife, I know not the best available, as she's got fed up with talking to the the Lan line contract companies about dramas and incompetence etc, not to mention we've moved, and for what I'm doing, it's OK, speeds are slow for download/upload but for browsing/posting on HHAD etc then it's fine and quick enough, however..........

Seems right, been having a devil of a time with sorting out an acceptable level of security for the thing, the paid security packages (Kaspersky/Nod 32 etc) don't like it and the free ones like AVG didn't get along too well either, haven't tried Avast yet, but that'll be next.buksida wrote:I use FF also and don't have any of those problems. It sounds like your security settings are too high and the HHAD cookies and session ID information is not getting stored. Try lowering your browser security or it you have an internet security suite check settings in there.
