The French call us Rosbifs, I presume because of our liking for the noonday sun.

Does anyone have a phone number or email address for "Fish and Chips" Richard?

If so, I would appreciate a PM.

On the little street leading from Naresdamri to the Chinese temple there's F/C restaurant called Gob's Fish and Chips Bistro.
You'll get your choice of cod, haddock or snapper. The portions are large, the chips are just right and the beer is cold.

For 200 baht for a large portion of excellent cod you’ll get value for the money.

Yes Farang,

I have eaten there many times and it was my 2nd favorite for fish 'n' chips after the aforementioned Original Fish and Chip Restaurant which doesn't seem to be open whenever I go there nowadays.

I highly recommend the place, but it is very small and it's only good for a quick meal of fish and chips whereas I loved the "Original" place as it was aircon'ed when you needed it and not only the owner Richard but his sister in law who used to run the place was a delight! :thumb:

By all means, if you want some of the best fish and chips in town try the place near the Chinese temple. They make a great meal!

Honestly, are any of you folks really that experienced with fish that you could do a taste test and tell what is cod, haddock or snapper?

Yes, I know the English grow up with cod fish and chips and perhaps the flavour and texture is engrained for life. For me and many of us, I doubt we can tell, but simply believe the menu.

Also, cod has become a very expensive fish. How can they source it here in Thailand and sell a large portion for 200 baht? Pete

A bit of poking around indicates that here in Asia there are two fish that resemble cod and are sold as cod in many places. Oil fish and snow fish.

Terry....white courtesy phone please. Pete

Pete, It's not the type of fish that makes the difference for me as much as the taste, texture, crispness or firmness (hate soggy fish and chips), and the batter.

The two places mentioned in this thread do all of the above very well imo! :thumb:

Fish and Chip Shop now at Brownes

Post by lovethailand »

I was also a regular at the original fish and chip shop run by Richard and was disappointed to see it had closed down. However I walked past one day and a guy called Garry was loading some gear and he told me it was now situated at Brownes Guesthouse just off the Klondyke(canal Road) up the road left of Stand Online internet cafe.

I went up there and sure enough it was as good as I remember in the old one with their own homemade Tartar Sauce,Mushy Peas and fresh cod. The chips are the big American steakhouse chips. All for only 220 Baht I was lucky enough to go in during Happy hour between 3pm and 9pm and I had 2 Large Leos for 70 Baht each.

Richard told me they do deliveries anywhere in Hua Hin as well for a 50 Baht surcharge and if you order 6 Portions of Fish and chips one is free.....

He asked me to give his and Garry's numbers to everyone so I am posting it here I hope it's okay to do that.

[ Details edited - this establishment and its 'owners' have had more then enough free promotion on this website. If they want to be professional about it and advertise they know what to do. ]

Can you be a little more specific about its whereabouts off the Canal Road - by directing from either the Driving Range or the (non operating) Traffic Lights

I'm sure if you call either Garry or Richard they will tell you I've heard it's a Northern Delicacy not one I'd fancy trying myself.

Go out towards Cha Am from the Non operating traffic lights (away from town) for about 500 metres you then past the Yellow Bridge where the Arsenal is and then take the next bridge. Over the bridge to your right you'll see Stand Online Internet Cafe once over the bridge turn Left then take next left up a gravel road Brownes is the first building on the Left about 100 Metres from the Junction.

lovethailand,
I live out past where you are talking about and have absolutely no idea where any of your landmarks are! The non-operating traffic lights are OK but Yellow Bridge and Arsenal are not familiar at all. Can you reference your directions with some other landmarks please? Also from your directions it sounds like Brownes is actually in the canal! If you turn left after crossing the bridge over the canal, you would be on a road that is next to and parallel to the canal, and then left again that is where you would end up I think... :?
