The self-isolation measure would mean people being asked to remain at home without visitors and with vital supplies dropped off for them on their doorsteps.
We're talking of the best part of 10 million people spread around the UK. Servicing them at home daily for up to 4 months........ Really?
Groceries and other essentials, health care, etc. The list is long.

There are many over 70 who are very independent. To go into self isolation would be very hard mentally and difficult, at least, to have the chores they are used to tackling themselves, given to someone else. Finding the individual help would be quite a mammoth task.

My mother is 95 and still does her own shopping. Lives with my disabled sister and has no immediate family in the city. There must be many more like her.

Noble idea but quite unworkable, in my opinion.

I consider myself to be compassionate person and a humanist but we are dealing with politicians here who would sell their souls to the devil so please don't shoot the messenger, i'm just spitballing here.

I wonder how many people in positions of power are really serious about this pandemic. As I understand it most people under a certain age and without any underlying health issues would survive a bout of CoVid. The people at risk are the elderly who, some politicians of a certain political leaning might consider them already a burden on the Welfare State and in the UK the NHS .

As for the UK govt. introducing self isolation for the over 70's in the coming weeks, how many vulnerable people could become ill in the meantime?

I hate to think this way but given the current crop in power I have absolutely no faith in them or their political motives.

And for the record my mother is 91 and lives alone in the UK, my brother lives nearby but he has his own health issues as well.

As for the USA, God help you if Trump invokes Emergency powers, he will use them for his own agenda!!

Just to reiterate these are not my own views and I wish all of our posters who have vulnerable family members across the globe the very best of luck.

I was being sucked in by that, and thought what a reasonable post until the above. Is that a typo? If not, who's views are they?

Apologies BB, what I was trying to get across is that I do not share the views of any politician who may or may not use the current crisis for their own political ends.

Everything else is all me

Yep, I agree, in hindsight it does appear somewhat ambiguous.

I think the only thing that most of us agree on, is that it’s going to get a lot worse before it starts to get better. I’m not a fan of any of the politicians but to be fair to them all, there stuck between a rock and a hard place - there are no easy solutions to this crisis.

Talking about getting worse:
BANGKOK, March 15 (Reuters) - Thailand reported 32 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the total infections in the Southeast Asian country to 114, health officials said.

It was the biggest daily jump in cases in Thailand, which was one of the first countries outside China to report coronavirus infections that has since swept much of the world.

However, other experts say that although likely, there is not enough known at present.
"However, in certain individuals, the antibody cannot last that long," Li told USAToday. "For many patients who have been cured, there is a likelihood of relapse."

In children, it is currently believed that the virus causes the development of “at least short-term immunity”.
No one knows for sure, but most children likely develop at least short-term immunity
But just as the flu can mutate, so could Covid-19, which would make an individual susceptible to reacquiring the infection.
it seems likely that having the disease once results in immunity in most individuals - as is seen with other coronaviruses.
“Coronaviruses aren’t new, they’ve been around for a long, long time and many species - not just humans - get them,” he explained. “So we know a fair amount about coronaviruses in general. For the most part, the feeling is once you’ve had a specific coronavirus, you are immune. We don’t have enough data to say that with this coronavirus, but it is likely.”
While further studies are needed to understand whether it is possible for an individual to be reinfected with new coronavirus, experts recommend those who have been infected follow the hygiene steps outlined by CDC, which include staying away from people who are sick, frequently washing hands, and covering coughs and sneezes.

It is known that seasonal 'flu mutates twice a year and also twice a year, the vaccine is modified to cater for what the mutation will be. Sometimes they get it wrong as they have this season. The vaccine currently available is far from a perfect match.

'Herd transmission', although great in theory, is far too much of a risk until more studies and research has been done.

I believe that Canada will soon have a lot more cases of the virus. I flew from Bangkok to Taipei
Taiwan, then on to Vancouver BC Canada, and finally to Calgary Alberta. At Bangkok almost all
the Asians boarding my EVA flight were wearing their masks, while some older travellers including
me were also wearing ours, but I noticed lots of younger foreign travellers did not. At Taipei all the staff
were wearing masks, and again most of the Asian travellers wore their masks, while less than 50 percent
of the Canadian and other travellers did not bother to wear masks. At Vancouver, no staff members
of the airport wore masks, and same for the Calgary airport. I think the attitudes of a lot of people
have to change if this virus is going to get under control. If anyone is flying to Canada, you may want to do it sooner rather than later, as there may be less flights and even longer delays to make sure no traveller is
infected.
