Not a golfist myself but I've just come this that might interest some:

Hua Hin, Thailand (PRWEB) June 10, 2011

The 1st Thailand Team Amateur Championship will take place at Hua Hin in Thailand, from November 26th - December 3rd 2011.

This new concept is designed to give amateur golfers a chance to experience what it is like to play back to back tournaments, just like their hero’s the professional players do every week.

The Championship will take place at three first class courses, Jack Nicklaus’s Springfield, Banyan Golf Club, winner of the several Asian golf awards and Black Mountain Golf Club home of the Royal Trophy and the Asian Masters.

The Participants will play 5 rounds of golf: 2 practice rounds and 3 rounds of tournament play. Each Team consist in 4 Amateurs, with every player playing his/her ball individually, and the 2 best scores to count each hole.

Organized by Asia’s leading golf tour specialists GolfAsian, the Championship is open to all amateurs. Tournament Director Marco Scopetta, an ex professional golfer on the Swiss PGA Tour said, ’We will use the AM+AM Tournament format, similar to the Pro Ams, whereby the best two scores per hole will count. Played on some of the best courses in Thailand, we expect players of all levels to experience some great golf and to enjoy the wonderful hospitality in the land of the smiles, during their week in Thailand.’

"Golfist"... I like that term Steve and have never seen it before... kind of like the old west hit man movie called "Shootist". Plus in Golfist, I like the "fist" part as that is what I do constantly after I hit a shot... make a fist and swear at the course, myself, where the ball ended up, or that I'm giving up the sport forever! :thumb:

It sounds to me like some tour operator is making up his own '' Open Championship'' just to sell a product. It just sounds good but it is not a tournament which is run by the Thailand Golf Association - handicap checking procedure ?
I am not knocking this just putting some honest comment. Last year there was a so called World Championship event with loads of tourists signing up etc etc run by another tour operator.

"The golfist is a follower of golfism. A golfer will play occasionally for company, to avoid yard work, and to hide from the wife. A golfer plays for money, for competition, and for status.
A golfist, on the other hand, goes to worship in the greeny cathedral of his passion. He labors for that pure moment that affirms the presence of perfection in his otherwise imperfect world, no matter how evanescent. The turn of his swing is like the turn of a prayer wheel. His sufferings, his achy joints, his deep pain the mortifications and deprivations of a monk."

Fairways at Lake View are in similar condition to Dolphin Bay and that's free! Layout thoughts are of course personal but I think one of the two main nines is average and the other one is terrible. Greens are in good condition but again badly designed, my least favourite course in the Hua Hin area.

Some of the A & B fairways are poor but the greens are very good. C & D fairways are in much better condition but I do think the layout of A, B & C is good

Other than my score, I can't fault Royal Ratchaburi.
Everything is in perfect order other than the bunkers which are a bit grainy and compacted. I was in most bunkers so I promise I can speak from experience and I didn't play well out of them. So, I'm biased.
OK, it takes about 1.45 hours to get there but midweek rates are 740 for green fee and caddie. It's excellent value and in great condition - other than those bunkers!! Well worth the effort to get there. Tees, fairways and greens all good.
The unfortunate thing is that better golfers get a chance to win off the front tees. They should be teeing off 30 yds further back.
For anyone who hasn't played the course before, holes 12,13 and 14 are a real challenge. I've never conquered them. They can break your back and your score.
Great golf.

I have been reliably told that Kasikorn Bank have entered into a green fee deal with some clubs, so long as you pay with a Kasikorn Credit/Debit card.

For example you can play Royal Ratchaburi on week days for Bht440 and a little further on to Kananchaburi you can play Blue Saphire for Bht300.

Anybody interested should visit the bank to make more enquiries

A few of us would like to play in this Team Amateur Championship.
But, we don't have handicap certificates.
Where would we get one?
How many rounds do you need to get a cert?
Thanks

What was I saying in a previous post yesterday about handicap checking for this event !!

Most golfers belong to a golf club who will issue a handicap certificate, eg on generally the Congu System or the US Golf Assoc if in North America.

I just ask that if you regularly play golf, be it official events or friendly wagers among friends, on what basis do you handicap yourselves?

Try one of the online handicapping sytems out there. The more details you put in, the more details of your game you get out (greens in regulation/putts per round etc)

www.truehandicap.com

They offer a free 90 day trial. It's very good

Thaigolfer.com offers a free handicaping service (you just have to join which is also free) and as an advantage they have a drop down menu of most courses in Thailand including slope and rating for the courses that have those. I use it for my handicap and have even made up a credit card sized ThaiGolfer (fake) club card with my name, handicap, and last 20 scores, just in case I need a card at some courses or events.

They will also make additions and changes to the list if you send them an email... I got them to add the Sea Pines Military course to the list! :thumb:

The only problem (as I mentioned earlier in this thread) is that a lot of Thai courses do not have a course rating and slope which are necessary to get a true handicap index under the official formula. This site plugs in a 72 course rating and 113 slope as a default for courses like that, but those numbers are user changeable if you have better information.

A handicap is simply that. I don't understand where a slope rating comes from. Honestly, I don't.

Lomu, if you look up (in the USGA) or in the Royal and Ancient Golf rules handicap section, it is not simple. It is based on a very complicated formula that is calculated by the best ten out of the last twenty rounds you have played. The courses also make a difference as they are each rated with two numbers, course rating and slope. Your handicap index is based on your score on a course taking into consideration the difficulty of the course, i.e., course rating and slope... with your history and knowledge of golf, I'm surprised you didn't know this.

In fact, this complicated calculation gives you a handicap index, not a handicap. The handicap index is used with the course rating and slope of each course to arrive at your handicap for that particular course... i.e., your handicap will vary a little depending on the difficulty of the course being played.
