DM
so the 'devices' are designed to contain pressure, judging by the flange bolting with no welding evident probably WW1 age which somehow might be parts for a bloody big cannon

Not me, Jimbob, but I think the devices you're talking about are the Bouncing Bomb - have a scroll through the thread!

Ageing the photo by the clothes they're wearing, and the fact there's a gantry going into the air, I reckon it must be some sort of dock for an airship - a zeppelin maybe.

The Paris Gun (also known as Lange Max, Big Bertha, Kaiser Wilhelm Geschuetz) of World War I was the direct ancestor of the V-3. The rail-mounted weapon was 34 meters long and weighed 125 tonnes.

From March through August of 1918, three of the guns shot 351 shells at Paris from the woods of Crepy, killing 256 and wounding 620.

OK, a very very quickie, but you have to promise not to Google it, cross your heart and hope to get stung by a nasty stingy thing.

What was the original Duke of Wellington's surname at birth?

And one more before I go to bed.

These items came into being in Europe in the first quarter of the 16th century. They evolved into an integral part of US life.

What are they?

I recall that Hitler made a similar gun in WWII. I don't think it was much of a success due to it's huge size and it needed something like 98 men to operate it. Operated on rail tracks also I believe and was used.....but against what city or in what battle I don't know? Pete

EDIT: Saddam Hussein tried to make a super gun also. I recall news articles about huge pipes being intercepted that were meant for it. Something got produced though and test fired, but I don't think it ever went into a battle or was used against Israel, its primary target I believe.

I was going to try to develop a question or two out of the below link, but the numbers and categories are so staggering that I lost my mood. I'll just post it in amazement for others to study. :( Pete
