Re: Buying a new smart TV

I watched the original Avatar in 4K on it last night using the Marshall speaker for sound and it really was like going to a movie theatre - well impressed with the TV.

WC final tonight!

We have a couple of the Sony XR series tvs where the screens themselves are part of the sound system, especially the bass
The sales people promised us we needn't worry about forking out extra money on sound bars and they were pretty much right there, must admit the sound is pretty damn good.

I thought my TV had pretty good sound. Then I installed a soundbar and realised that 'pretty good' was not so good as I thought.

Yep, the built-in speakers on this Hisense model are pretty feeble with virtually no bass. But I guess that is expected with a lower-end TV (it only cost 13,370). Rigging it up to the Marshall makes a massive difference.

Haven't tried putting it on the wall yet. :duck:

Although I believe they are quite expensive TV’s - but the Sony TV with built in speakers may not be much different in price to a TV plus a sound bar?

To be honest, I've not seen/found a TV that has sound that comes close to a Soundbar and Subwoofer - the latter is a must. TV sound simply can't compete - well, let's be fair, where do you put decent speakers and a subwoofer on a flat screen TV?

What did you go for buks?

I've forked out on a new TV to watch all..... Which the LHG doesn't know about yet :duck: , but I guess it will fit in the spare room where I suspect I'll be for the foreseeable future  :(
So assuming the LHG doesn’t put a hammer through it, what make/size of TV will you be watching your favourite programmes on?

At the end of the day I went for a "HISENSE - 50A6BGTUK 50" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR LED TV" - very good picture IMO, perfect size for what I want (movies, sports, 3D, all Apps I need etc.) and at a little over £300 - a great price. Just need to see how long it lasts now to see if it's value for money!!

Obviously TV’s, even by the same manufacturer vary, but I was looking at a Hisense 65” TV today in HomePro and the picture quality looked excellent (to my 👀) and the equivalent of just over £400 - my current 55” Samsung TV is only 4 years old so I’m not looking to upgrade it yet, but if/when I do, I will definitely consider Hisense.

My existing TVs are Samsung - they have lasted well. One I am replacing is well past it's sell by date and has issues (hence the replacement). The Samsung I'm keeping is 6 odd years old and still going strong (although a little out of date with regards to Apps etc.).

I did look at Samsung TV's, but you were realistically looking at 50% extra or more in price. As mentioned, picture quality of the Hisense was great and it had all the bells and whistles - the question is just reliability now, but it's a 5 year warranty so.......

One thing I'm finding with the Hisense is it is fussier with video formats than the LG was. It likes MP4 but won't play AVI format, throwing up an "unsupported codec" error. MKVs are hit-and-miss, it plays most of them but has errored on occasion. Using the laptop and HDMI cable eliminates all codec issues.

/\ My Samsung OLED won't entertain AVI and some MKV formats. When downloading from Pirate Bay I always look for HDTV X264 Torrent Galaxy d/l's.

No, my Samsung TV's wouldn't touch AVI or MKV. I generally have a laptop linked to the main TV to watch (streaming) sports and 3D (watched through VLC Player), so that's really not a big issue for me. But it's getting delivered today, so I'll have a play and see :thumb:
