One reason I like Hua Hin is because its not Pattaya, I have come across and heard about a few louts like him over there. Hope the police throw him out, do not need bullys trying to intimidate good honest buisness people.

Met a man like him on Samui a few years back, bragging he was exSAS, telling how many people he had killed during his time in and out of the forces, I think he said he was a butcher. Right nutter, made my excuse and found another bar.

I'm not in business, just a frequent visitor but I'll have a go at this question.
I know/have heard of many who have been shafted on property. Just hang out at any bar, bring up property and it won't be long before you hear stories of a certain Greek developer who every month has his picture surrounded by local politicians in the only English newspaper in Hua Hin. He's being sued by multiple people at the moment and they can't comment on their cases. A certain Dutch developer gets a lot of mention. There are several Dutch developers but one gets the lion's share of the bad mouthing.

The municipality has done nothing about these people for years even though they know the whole story. That's the main problem. The municipality could shut down most of the crooked/incompetent farang developers by just enforcing their rules. By listening to those who complain. By sending a building inspector to the sites to check the quality of the build. Are they following the engineering plans? DO THEY EVEN HAVE ANY ENGINEERING PLANS? They could save a lot of "stupid" farangs a lot of heart ache not to mention money. But the sad truth seems to be that he who has the biggest bag of money get the cooperation of the authorities and the developers have the cash.

You can say, "let the buyer beware." Put all the responsibility on the buyer. But the deck is stacked againt the buyer and the devil is dealing the cards. The property magazines will print any lie a developer will pay for. Every developer now being sued has pages and pages of glossy adverts in these magazines. The magazines know who are the "bad guy" but their revenue comes from the developers. There is a law about defamation in Thailand that prevents the media from writing negaitve stories about a business. There is no law against printing a lie that is positive about a development, but you cannot print a truth that is negative.

What is needed is "a new sheriff" in town-a new attitude. When the authorities start doing what is done in Britian, Europe and America, enforcing regulations, then most of the crooks will disappear. Until then things will go on as before.

I met the Greek dude in question before, he spoke of having 5-600 homes under construction at once. He seemed very rich and a smooth talker as well. I also know some folks who work for him. I did not know about the malfeasance but then again I'm not surprised.

Unfortunately HH I've noticed has quite a few rotten apples in it. Something could be done if all the businesses get together and start 'sending them to coventry' and just making them persona non-grata from all expat businesses.

But one thing I never do is question someone's military service unless I hear something really odd. I generally thank them for their service. Maybe the guy in C'mai took your challenge as an insult. I used to run a sub 6 minute mile in combat boots. Now I can barely walk a mile.

FWIW, I ran across a couple of SOG guys in BKK a few years back. For many years, they had to tell friends and family they were truck divers, involved in research, etc. The thing that came across in all cases; the only war tales they told were funny ones .. and they were all really nice folks.

My apologies to the OP but the answers to your questions from me is "yes" to all as you of course expected. In a few cases the victim has been me. The thing that pisses me of the most is that in all three cases of me being ripped off for a five or six figure sum it has been by someone who has been recommended to me and has come across as laudable.

In some cases what you say maybe true but I know in at least two that the victims are clean as a whistle. However he wouldn't be the first big guy who thinks he can do what he likes and walk all over everybody.

In both cases the two guys are completely irrational in their arguments and totally ignorant of the fact that they are in Thailand. The crazy thing is that they get away with liberties that they would have no chance of getting away with in England.

What I have noticed is that the more honest and successful you are the more likely you are to be harassed by these jealous people.

Other statements on this thread so far which, although logical and feasible are not true. It is not just a matter of money greasing the right palms. In general the MIB are not really interested in farang on farang small or fraudulent crime unless one farang in particularly respected by them or there is a fee paid. There is one very unsavory British character that is still around. He too, is an ex special services, SAS, sharp shooting commando that can kill a man with his bare hands. He gave up the offer by the British Army to go to Iraq on a special mission to assassinate loyal supporters of Sadam Hussein and decided to stay in Hua Hin and continue in the lucrative 'phone stealing business. The police are well aware of his activities but feel he is not worth pursuing. They are waiting for a private prosecution or an offer of money.

The comparison with Spain's Costa Del Crime scenario is invalid. The situation there started when mostly wealthy professional London villains found that so long as there were no outstanding charges against them that they could travel and live in Spain without fear of extradition. A major difference was these guys really were villains and in most cases had made enough from their crimes to allow them to live without working. These guys coming to Hua Hin to establish themselves as plastic gangsters are not in the same league.

Hathcock's kill at 2250 m is 'over a mile'. It was also in the '70s.
